The news today at the Port Taranaki boat ramp and H&F shop is that 6 metres of Great White shark is back cruising around the islands and seal colony outside the harbour.

Yes it is there and I wish i had seen it from the comfort of my lounge than from the seat of my yak. Went out early afternoon and had just set anchor and berly got the lines down when i saw a shadow on my left looked up no cloud looked back saw the shadow was under me looked to my left and with no sun glear on that side it was no shadow. After watching it slowly move under my yak about 2m down it swam off. After a minute of being as still as i could i realised sh*t i have berly under me so pulled that and anchor in world record time and made a beline for the breakwater. as soon as i had rocks under me i paddled along to the end of the main breakwater had a good look around and made a beline for the end of the lee breakwater and once again hugged that back to the boat ramp where the DOC boat had just come in so i let them know what I saw and they seemed very happy to hear that it was out there. I will say its a big fish but it did not seem overly interested in me one pass underneath me and i never saw it agian and i was looking trust me. Quite an experence really not so much at the time but now that im home safe it was a spectacular fish.

Yaket and I were out by Saddleback Island on Monday evening when we both heard a mighty splash to the left of us.  We both turned to see the aftermath of the splash and DANG,  it was BIG!!!!!  Not having my TLD50 onboard, we decided to get the hell out of there.  This just comfirms what it was we heard!!!

Anyone get the GPS on it - might sneak down and see if I can foul hook a sea gull for a lure - would 4kg main line with 15kg leader be enough - I'd hate to just winch it in

yeah not much chance of being taken.. but i still wouldnt be hanging around.

i went down the port for lunch today couldnt see any one out fishing in kayaks today.

I feel that Great Whites Shark are just mis-understood. Movies like Jaws have given them a bad reputation which they do not really deserve. I suggest a name change.

They are now called

Great Cuddly White Sea Kittens, and instead of attacking and eating people they enjoy tummy and head rubs.
