The news today at the Port Taranaki boat ramp and H&F shop is that 6 metres of Great White shark is back cruising around the islands and seal colony outside the harbour. 
Mmmm... perhaps I'll skip the Tuna trolling tomorrow and go Snapper & Gurnard fishing up the coast instead.

Yes it is there and I wish i had seen it from the comfort of my lounge than from the seat of my yak. Went out early afternoon and had just set anchor and berly got the lines down when i saw a shadow on my left looked up no cloud looked back saw the shadow was under me looked to my left and with no sun glear on that side it was no shadow. After watching it slowly move under my yak about 2m down it swam off. After a minute of being as still as i could i realised sh*t i have berly under me so pulled that and anchor in world record time and made a beline for the breakwater. as soon as i had rocks under me i paddled along to the end of the main breakwater had a good look around and made a beline for the end of the lee breakwater and once again hugged that back to the boat ramp where the DOC boat had just come in so i let them know what I saw and they seemed very happy to hear that it was out there. I will say its a big fish but it did not seem overly interested in me one pass underneath me and i never saw it agian and i was looking trust me. Quite an experence really not so much at the time but now that im home safe it was a spectacular fish. ------------- Sometimes the best dressed person turns out to be a suit salesman |

Yaket and I were out by Saddleback Island on Monday evening when we both heard a mighty splash to the left of us. We both turned to see the aftermath of the splash and DANG, it was BIG!!!!! Not having my TLD50 onboard , we decided to get the hell out of there. This just comfirms what it was we heard!!!

Anyone get the GPS on it - might sneak down and see if I can foul hook a sea gull for a lure - would 4kg main line with 15kg leader be enough - I'd hate to just winch it in

i went down the port for lunch today couldnt see any one out fishing in kayaks today.

I went out around the islands last night with a mate in his boat and we saw 1 bloody massive fin  come out of the water and tried to get a decent look at it but it wasnt interested in the scraps we threw it. We joked about it bein the great white until I saw this thread!!! Think the port might be a little quieter as far as yakin goes for a while now huh . Oh well lucky we're heading north for the weekend then.

I feel that Great Whites Shark are just mis-understood. Movies like Jaws have given them a bad reputation which they do not really deserve. I suggest a name change.
They are now called Great Cuddly White Sea Kittens, and instead of attacking and eating people they enjoy tummy and head rubs.

Gurnard yes thats what it was got a little confused
 , My bad Gurnard-Great white-Gurnard-Great white you can see where i made the mistake both starting with G and all. But in all seriousness I know the stats say your more likely to die driving to the ramp than getting eaten by a Great white but those stats kind of go out the window when there is a Great white under your kayak. Like I said yesterday it didn't seem all that interested in me and looking back at it from the safety of my house it was an awesome sight but I wouldn't want to see one again in that situation. At the end of the day it's been out there for a few years now and from what I understand no one has been attacked by it but still had no plans on tempting fate as it has been said there is always a first. The DOC guys were saying they had someone who was looking to get a GPS tracker into it. If they do i would be keen to get hold of the info to know where it is at and where not to fish  at any given time.------------- Sometimes the best dressed person turns out to be a suit salesman |

When, where, how? They are nearly as cool as Great Cuddly White Kittens. They are magnificent creatures, nothing to be paranoid about. Here is a plan, kayak out to one of the rocky islands off the Kaikoura Peninsula, find a good ledge. Chuck heaps of burley, red cod chunks ect around and hopefully attract in a Mako or three. Then in one of the red cod chunks include a big shiney hook  . Not to keen battling mr jumpy from a kayak.

Chaddy was interviewed on the radio today about the shark threat out the naki port. He said he is out in his boat around the the islands every day and all he has seen are Orcas and Sun fish, no Great Whites. DOC gave a warning to kayakers about being out fishing around the islands because of the GW feeding in the area. When asked has DOC seen the shark they said no but were told by a kayaker who had seen it . ------------- LOVE THE FREEDOM SHAD |

Ha, you got her number? My old man saw her in 06' off Oakura and absolutely mailto:s#@t - s#@t himself. Pulled anchor and headed for home. And he was in a 17ft boat!

Seen a small GW of 2.5m or so hooked in dorsal on 37kg... like HLD said it didn't even know it was hooked.

As I remember last time it was here the DOC checked it out and instead of 1 found 3 (but not all as big as Le Terror). Its no wonder when you create the ideal conditions for its main primo dinner seals by setting up a marine reserve (which attracts seals) then they are going to turn up all the time. Its a bit like going to the same pub you pulled at last week. Your going to keep going back aren't you.
Oh by the way are our yaks 3 or 4mm thick.
The carrots should be thick as in a few months I'm guessing

JB Must correct you. DOC did not see any GWs in 2006 off Taranaki despite using huge amounts of berley to attract some for tagging.
Also the marine reserve has nothing to do with the 500 or so seals that are around the islands at times. They are protected under the Marine Mammals Act regardless of where they are.
BTW According to a little birdie one marlin has already been hooked off Taranaki by a kayaker this year but could not be landed. The game is really on fellas, so ger out there GWs or no GWs.

| Albies everywhere. We went out in a boat on Thursday, they were from 40m behind the islands to 110m. We were throwing poppers to them while snapper fishing on the way home in 50m. We didn't see any marlin while troling though. Back to the kayak of BB this week. |

I had a marlin up on a livebait last week, was in 66m off Tapuae (not in the reserve) It was playing with the surface bait but wouldn't eat, I pulled it in expecting to find the bait shredded, but was unmarked and swimming, the fish then moved to the downrigged bait and continued to pull small amounts of string. This lasted maybe five minutes during which time I saw a long slender black fin, a shark would have shredded the baits and a shark fin this definitely was not.
Heading back out tomorrow to get the real proof, anyone wants to come they are welcome but be prepared for white sharks, 15kn souwesterlys and a long paddle.
Tight lines.
PS, snapper are easy, go get a real fish!!!

Been out as far as 90m behind saddle back while the fish were being hooked, but no cigar.
Spent three days out there but the 90m is ten km out and the 95m where the fish were is significantly further. Saw nothing at all, hopefully the fish will be closer in after this latest crap clears.

Gut hook it, then it will come up dead! Then use the vhf and arrange a pickup. As with tagging, the fish is deamed caught when the tag is in, not when it hits the beach
