I am new here and live in England. Just been browsing the chat room, much to my amusement. Big thing here is using WD40 as an attractor on both sea & freshwater baits. Some people wrap a pipe cleaner soaked in the stuff just above baits (natural and artificial). It is so effective that some competion circuits have banned it.

Just wondered if it had caught on down there yet.

Studys into enviro. impact are taking place.

Seems like the NZ agents are in for a killing!

Any thoughts on what the attractant agent is? Maybe room for some enterprising person to adapt the recipe to "super berley"!

penguin - never did much saltwater fishing till I moved out from UK to NZ (NO - do not ask when!) - but just curious - is it an attractant more to salt or freshwater - I know you mention both above) - are any sepcific species REALLY keen on it?

Alimat. It is very popular with predators such as pike. I dont do sea fishing much now, used to in Cornwall. My mate who is a boatie tells me it is the thing to try specially on hard days. Dogfish cant resist it.

Where were you in uk? I am in Epsom, surrey so too far inland for serious sea bashing

Hellfire, Epsom. I've run as far away from New Malden as I possibly can and a bloke turns up from Epsom.

Raynes Park, Motspur Park, Worcester Park..............Epsom (Leatherhead, Effingham Junction - just where did I put that anorak?). The mere thought of it makes me shudder. FL, If you ever catch me complaining about Lows of 956 south of Stewart Island again, just PM me one word - Epsom

Dogfish penguin? I can see you need to move your plans forward!

Here in the land of Pom bashing, we don't usually count doggie's as worthwhile. Except on a hard day!

Penguin, I shall attempt to pen you a reasoned answer that rises above all this anti Pom sentiment; an answer that doesn't even mention how much we enjoyed THRASHING the "world champion" rugby team, which I believe comes from up your way.

I've heard about using WD40 as a fish attractant but I'd say the consensus here is "unproven." I did some work with the guys from CRC (a product very similar to WD40) and they reckon it works. In fact I went fishing with them out of Tauranga, and one of them sprayed his bait with CRC to "prove" it works.

That was the only fish caught that day. So maybe it does. We tend to use different techniques here so the WD40 trick is not widely used.

Welcome to the forums.

Nobody has ever come up with a great idea after a second bottle of water.

Cheers!!! Thanks for that Bender, and Barrie. Have alraedy had a fish from beach at Kuaotunu bay in March this year. Only had a couple of tiny snapper, but it gave me taster. They went back by the way.

Where abouts on Coromandel are you Barrie? We drove around most of I think. Bloody beautiful place.

It was not THE world cup team you thrashed, that was our junior side having a gentle practice outing

WD40 is basically deodourised fish oil, I guess there is enough scent molecules left to tickle fish noses.

Oil of Olay is another one guys, made with cod liver oil which trout go mad over.......I DID NOT SAY THAT

A workmate and I have taken to sniffing vivid markers to make the day go quicker.

Seriously, WD40, CRC and Inox smell pretty good to me too!

For fish it must be something to do with the oil slick created and the strong smell. Wonder how long it lasts in the water?
