I am new here and live in England. Just been browsing the chat room, much to my amusement. Big thing here is using WD40 as an attractor on both sea & freshwater baits. Some people wrap a pipe cleaner soaked in the stuff just above baits (natural and artificial). It is so effective that some competion circuits have banned it.
Just wondered if it had caught on down there yet.
Studys into enviro. impact are taking place.

Seems like the NZ agents are in for a killing!
Any thoughts on what the attractant agent is? Maybe room for some enterprising person to adapt the recipe to "super berley"! |

penguin - never did much saltwater fishing till I moved out from UK to NZ (NO - do not ask when!) - but just curious - is it an attractant more to salt or freshwater - I know you mention both above) - are any sepcific species REALLY keen on it?

Alimat. It is very popular with predators such as pike. I dont do sea fishing much now, used to in Cornwall. My mate who is a boatie tells me it is the thing to try specially on hard days. Dogfish cant resist it.

Penguin, I shall attempt to pen you a reasoned answer that rises above all this anti Pom sentiment; an answer that doesn't even mention how much we enjoyed THRASHING the "world champion" rugby team, which I believe comes from up your way.
I've heard about using WD40 as a fish attractant but I'd say the consensus here is "unproven." I did some work with the guys from CRC (a product very similar to WD40) and they reckon it works. In fact I went fishing with them out of Tauranga, and one of them sprayed his bait with CRC to "prove" it works.
That was the only fish caught that day. So maybe it does. We tend to use different techniques here so the WD40 trick is not widely used.
Welcome to the forums.

Cheers!!! Thanks for that Bender, and Barrie. Have alraedy had a fish from beach at Kuaotunu bay in March this year. Only had a couple of tiny snapper, but it gave me taster. They went back by the way.
Where abouts on Coromandel are you Barrie? We drove around most of I think. Bloody beautiful place.
It was not THE world cup team you thrashed, that was our junior side having a gentle practice outing

WD40 is basically deodourised fish oil, I guess there is enough scent molecules left to tickle fish noses.
Oil of Olay is another one guys, made with cod liver oil which trout go mad over.......I DID NOT SAY THAT

A workmate and I have taken to sniffing vivid markers to make the day go quicker.
Seriously, WD40, CRC and Inox smell pretty good to me too!
For fish it must be something to do with the oil slick created and the strong smell. Wonder how long it lasts in the water?

Penguin, I've used it and hooked a fish or three when all was quiet. Still have a canister on the boat for a last desperate throw of the dice. Must admit fishing companions thought I was winding them up. Have a South African fishing mate who tells stories about a range of attractants commercially avaliable there. Aniseed based was one.
Do you sit beside river and pond with the big brolly, fold up seat and hamper. Used to crack me up as a kid when I spent a few years in London? Didn't compare to wharf fishing in Wellington. Tried a few piers in the UK, but never did any good. Cheers, F.T.

1> Dog. yeah there are still a few kippers who have evaded capture, but not much in our(filthy) coastal waters. The Spanish & French nicked em all.
2>Fishful thinking. I used to fish at the lake edge just as you describe, but swop the picnic hamper for an eski full of cold beers. You really would not believe the number of flavours and attractors on the market up here. I have a mate who is heavily into Carp fishing (no he doesnt kill em). I reckon he spends as much a month on making his bait up as I do on my house. Mind you, I am in the building trade so it goes without saying that my place is a bit of a dump. By the way, what the kin hell has August got to do with anything, it`s still July.
3>Naki. I have never worn a knotted hanki/socks with me sandals or anything with the st.george cross on it, so maybe I aint really English.
4>Osphronemus (is that not part of the latin name for an asian fish species?) Yeah you can spot the poms a mile off when they are on holiday. Sock n Sandals are a cardinal sin in this house hold Punishable by with holding of nuptials.

Penguin,
See you down here, bring the esky, keep it full. I was in a Tokyo tackle shop a couple of years ago. Nothing heavy enough to handle a fiesty gold fish 'cause there was nothing left to catch. Hey Fishful. Just about the only trout left in the u.k are captive bred and chucked in by the lorry load every week. You then pay to snatch em out again. Poor buggers have never seen natural food in there short lives. Taste like, well they dont taste actually.
Piss taking??? I dont see any piss taking here. No none has mentioned the cricket yey by the way. Your slacking pom bashers.

Dateline May 2000 somewhere in darkest S.E. London
After a hard day at the office and having commuted to and from home on the train , with his nose stuck in some sweaty gits armpit , a flash of insperation strikes the tall handsome gent in the third carriage , off to the pub to get pissed.
After several mind clearing beers with a few mates our hero shambles back home to a very sober wife declaring " Thats it , had enough , we moving to NZ" ... " What... for a holiday ?" . Nope , I've decided were emigrating. And so it came to pass another pom washed up on the shores. One house , one more kid , one boat , one hell of a country !!

Good on you Penguin .. like all countries NZ has its problems, mainly weather related and how it affects the number of days we can go fishing, but its a paradise in my humble opinion and I wouldn't live anywhere else.
Look forward to your arrival. I've met and fished with a few and thoroughly enoyed it. I'm looking forward to doing a lot more and joining more forum get togethers later in the year.

As for this thread on WD40 it worries me that someone on here will decide that crude oil would be a good fish attractant. I can just see a flotilla of forum members off to sink a tanker and fish in the burley slick.......................

Penguin,
The Bent One is right, get on down and I'll bet you have 10 plus offers of a chance to sample the local water. I've met a small sample of the eclectic mix that regularly contribute to this site in Auckland. Adventure awaits. If you were in the same trade here and it was raining you would be sheltering in Show Girls untill fine weather made it safe to venture outdoors. Then you would go fishing, fit in a days work to show SWMBO (she who must be obeyed) that you are a family man, pop down to the bikini night at your local booze barn for a few games of pool then sleep the sleep of the innocent. Get to NZ and get a couple of lives like us!!! Cheers, F.T.

Before this topic goes completely off the rails , heres something i discovered
"Has any one ever told you use WD40 on your bait? or Preparation H? Well, as to the WD40, I dont know, but Preparation H happens to be made from 3 percent shark liver oil. Also an ingredient of several prepared baits you can buy. "
Interestingly The Suppositories contain Cocoa Butter 85.5%

So sharks dont get "Farmer Giles" paying them a visit then
I understand that the Americans in particular have been using wd40 for a few years. It is so widely used in fact, that some state authoritys have taken measures to restrict it or ban it because of envro. implications.
It is quite a hot topic on the American fishing scene.
