I think you just stated the situation in NZ pretty well. 
 
Throw in the fact that nearly all stores don't have the staff who know much about this sort of fishing.  We are starting to see REAL popper and stickbaits and they are a cut above the old reliable ones we all have lurking in the garage.  Likewise the modern popper rods, totally different to what most people were used to and could afford.

All of these are available in New Zealand, and I am sure there are a lot lot more.
Specialist shops like YeeHaa have a wide wide range Smile
