Yeah some are shaped like long poppers but with a door knob sort of cupped face and some are rounded like Bib-Less Minnows...

Some swim like Rapalas, some swim like poppers and pusher skirts on the surface.

Good thought, maybe a witchdoctor cast out on the xygoa fin-nor will make the Ulimate PopperWink

Well there ya go then! Next seasons contest will be to see who is first to get a marlin on a stickbait or popper eh. Tell you what BA, if you're gunna be chasing a lot of Marlin with a spinnig reel, and wanna look at something perhaps a little nicer than the Fin-nor (not that the Fin-nor is not nice, I just got 2 more of them myself), then have a looksee at the Accurate SR50 Twinspins.... maaaaatteeee.... what a reel!

I shall watch with interest the guys chasing Marlin on a popper rod as that WILL HURT.
using a stickbait on a jigrod as a switch and tease option is well doable but I suspect a marlin on a longer popper rod will be another challenge all together.

Here is a link to 360 tuna, specifically the lure building post, in which many examples of stickbaits, poppers and other lures can be found.
http://www.360tuna.com/forum/f87/carbon-kevlar-baits-11126/
After experiencing a couple of marlin surface feeding next to the boat this year i purchased some poping gear in the realisation that catching one on a popper or stikbait is very doable.
The lures these guys are building are very nice, I have gotten hold of a lathe and some wood turning tools in anticipation of trying to build a few myself. Painting lures as well as these guys is well beyond me, however I have spoken with JTF who as we all know is as good as these guys!!!

that is the plan Stu, kinda like the Fin-nor infact like you am getting a couple more, solely for marlin fishing, looking at the oh so nice xzoga popper rod to try it out on a popper/sticky thingLOL going to drop in line weight though, got two popper rods now, one for over head and one for the spinner, I have to say using the spinning gear is so much more enjoyable than the big sets. bring on the noise i say.Clap

For Marlin what hooks would you use on them?

Triples, doubles or singles??

Big Owner Jobu hooks will do the job, in my book you would have to at least cast to a marlin to be a legit stickbait capture ,none of this trolling stickbaits crap.

Just looked up those Nomad lures, looked at the price, and now after the ambulance has left and the CPR has done its job... I think I may just stick with me old cheapie ones after all. Flaming heck, $50AUD for a lure! Caramba!
Boulders would be one of the best I've seen off the 'net so far! A bit more affordable really.

interesting stella, was seriously thinking of a cirlce on a small length of 400, will certainly be a single hook for sure. oh well a few months to wait and ponder.

Mate of mine got  asmall Blue on a stick bait around 80 kilos, was targeting them. he was using singles. i spoke to him in great length about attempting it here nad his advice was to use big singles for Marlin. They also employed tease and twict to get the fish up

What's a stick bait made of? I assume they need to sink (compared to poppers which float).

Posted By: Boulder
Date Posted: 07 Jun 2010 at 7:43pm
stick baits like many poppers are made of wood with the odd ones in metal.
its wrong to think stickbaits sink as the best of the ones I have seen working in fact float in a vertical position when resting between strokes. ie Carpenters and fishermans.
I understand you can specify them as sinking or floating and is a huge part of the hook choice you need to run to get them to work properly.
Tricky things to get right but when you do its extraordinary
Book a trip with Ginga of Extreme charters as he is the best charter guru I know for stickbaits

Capt A if you think $50 is dear go buy a carpenter stickbait where you could well be asked for 250+ that is if you can even find one to buy

I'm loving it!  LOL
You guys have just gotten used to the price of quality jigging gear.....quality popping gear is over twice the price with decent Japanese poppers and stick baits virtually unattainable.  When they are, they'll cost between $150 to 250!

they are really no different in action to one of these but 3 times the price....
for my money i would rather run a Sperrys lure where the hook is attached to the line not the lure....

the old sperry still around Eric, I like your way of thinking.....

also thinking of the cedar plug, there are a few options there.

Cedar plug and sperries... two options I was thinking of as well! Oh boy, two quotes apply, "Great minds think alike" is the nice one, the one my Dad always used to use for my co-incidental brainwaves
was "Fools seldom differ!". Much less flattering :-)
Damned if I would ever spend $250 on one lure, unless I could cast bodyguards to accompany it on every cast....

yup I have already got a stock of cedar plugs. Thanks for the sperrys link as wellThumbs Up

Question for you Capt A as this was how it was put to me..............................................
"would you sooner have 1 lure that worked at 200 or 4 that didnt at 50 bucks each?"

Hmmm. good question mate, let's see....
No, I am more sure that the high price for a lure like that is far more to do with status and the Magpie Glitter factor than their inherent extra-special ability to attract fish.
My response Boulder would have been "Would you rather have a shark bite off one $200 lure before you decide to find somewhere less sharky, or risk a couple of $50 ones to see if there are any other fish in the area?"

And a Special "Dre" Custom....

Here are a couple for you Mozz:

Some other favourites:
Craftbaits

Hammerheads

Fullscale Beauties

DarkStar/Heru/Nomad

:-)

These will all be getting a test run on a remote 60 mile Seamount off the Mozambique coast in about 10 days..

All completely true BA and yes like many I have several kodak killers tucked away that I cant remember when last I ran them. Oh wait yes I can it was on one of my trips over the Manukau bar this season when the Mako,s came to play.
And I strongly suspect of the ones already purchased there will be more than a few cheap stickbaits and cedar plugs and god knows what that will get trundled around just in case.
But having seen the fooo nah ones work when bugger all else did I will buy what I think I want to use and to hell with it.
Big smileIt will make for interesting times when the executor of my will comes to sort out my garage

Cam - Yeah its kinda tough to show the actual size of some of these beasts..

But an indication on some:

The Clown Fish Hammerhead is an I-Cup.... it weighs 230 grams WITHOUT Hooks.... Shocked

I'll try shoot some pics soon and show the relative sizes....

Hopefully the lures will be battle scarred by then, and I can share some pics of them in fishes gobs!!!!!

The hooks on some all look to be recurves on the trebles...Hmmn

Hey Catch,

Thanks mate, just wish I had more time fishing than tackle collecting!!!

The Pilchard patterns you refering to are Smith Baby Runbohs.... they have been one of the most sought after Tuna casting lures for the last 18 months or so, mainly do to Gmann's popularising them with a bunch of his articles and reports on the US BFT fishery, and this being his favourite go to lure...
So of course they all got bought up and became like hens teeth, and so the price went along with it... I thankfully bought my batch from a guy selling a bunch of lures and I don't think he realised what he could get for them... he mails me every month trying to buy them back!! :-)

The recurve trebles you are refering to are in fact Gamakatsu GT Recorders... Barbless Trebles that are unfortunately also as rare as Hens teeth these days in the bigger sizes... they are the only Trebles I know of that go past a 5/0 size.... they go right up to 10/0 if I'm not mistaken... the ones I've got on there are 8/0....

I am moving towards more single hook rigs on poppers and stickbaits, but not completely... the action on our big Ulua Darkstars and such is so incredible with two trebles, its tough to switch, although I'm sure a Baker rig will get the same result.... I guess I just love the look of a 200 gram stick bait with 2 x 8/0 shiny Trebles hanging off it.... :)

From the talk, and Nepptune's amazing hoard of lures above - I assume that stick baits are all the rage overseas. Unfortunately, that does not seem to be the case in NZ. eg I went into the three major fishing shops in Rotorua, and no-one had any stick baits. Plenty of poppers, and hard lures designed for trolling; but nothing that you could call a stick bait, ie for casting and retrieving. Maybe the shops are just to darn small to fit them all in - what with the explosion in soft plastic lures (I refuse to call them baits), then fast jigs, slow jigs. etc. And holding stock takes money - in short supply!!

I think you just stated the situation in NZ pretty well.

Throw in the fact that nearly all stores don't have the staff who know much about this sort of fishing.  We are starting to see REAL popper and stickbaits and they are a cut above the old reliable ones we all have lurking in the garage.  Likewise the modern popper rods, totally different to what most people were used to and could afford.
