Just one important tip for FG knot.
FG knot will work on soft mono leader much better than Carbon leader.
The most popular leader materials are used on the market for FG knot.
Varivas Shock leader

Prosele casting leader
(YEEHAA fishing is the NZ Agent of Prosele products, the new products will be here soon) They are truly amazing leaders material super super thin and very soft & strong.

I have been using the FG knot for a number of years now , mostly out of a small boat , as good as the video of the knot with the reel is , I think if you learn it with your fingers as in wrapping the braid around you little finger and making the triangle with you other 2 fingers it is a lot easyer when you are rolling around , as for leader as Yeehaa has pointed out they are top brands , but there are a number of cheaper ones that work just as good , Dam for one for lighter line class to PE 5 , Jenki is another that I have used and still do to PE 8  , I have used Synder as a short leader , not as good but still works with out a problem , its all a price point ,

The technique looks similar to using the EZ Knotter... Let us know how the knot holds up Kurt, at no point did I see him tighten the wraps by pulling on it Confused

The EZ Knotter would be good if your hands are letting you down.

When you pull the leader back straight after doing the figure 8 the criss-cross pulls down tight and snug against the previous one biting into the leader so there is no need to "pull on it". Give it a go, you will be surprised how easy and effective it is, and a whole lot less fiddly.

That FG knot using the reel is mint!

Every wrap is pulled up tight and you can easily do nice uniform wraps, takes minimal concentration too! Haven't tied it on the boat yet but can't see it being anymore difficult.

Looking forward to trying that Prosele leader .
Agree that tying the FG with the reel is really easy to get good tension in the knot - just tried it out with a PE3 line . Will try it with the heavier lines tonight .

Not sure why people think the Variavas leader is expensive - it is cheaper than black magic at $40 or so for 50m compared to $30 for 30 m...

That way of tying the FG knot with the reel is similar to the way I've been doing it, with the line held tensioned over my knees. But the way he wraps it is different, will have to try that as well, thanks for posting the link Fish i.

Here is another simple method for tying the criss-cross weave in your FG.  I find this way the easiest.  I dont follow this guys finishing, just opting for half hitches as per Falcos first video.

Yep' Sebile for me use it for casting and jigging no prob's Thumbs Up. Fisherman and Vari' are my pick for leader material but will be trying the Prosele also when it arrives. With heavier casting Baits it doesn't matter so much but these softer leader materials work the smaller Stick baits ( Runboh etc) much better and dont kink or retain as much spool memory when stored for awhile IMO.

I had one let go that's all, mid cast the leader popped out leaving me with a loop which was the criss-cross section and the series of hitches in tact. I haven't tried it again but I will as I would have done something wrong.

Do you lock the leader on the final criss-cross by going under the braid (instead of over) and back through the loop, pull and the leader locks?

I use my fingers to tie the FG, I have 100% faith in my hand tied knot.

Tried both knots yesterday, one by hand and other using the reels drag.  Found both hold well but when doing the reel way it seems to twist the leader a bit an the knot finishes up a bit twisted while the hand way is straight as.
Found both ways easy an about the same amount of time to tie, rod way might be easier in rough conditions so im glad I practised both.

What knot do you guys use to attach your lure?

I FG all my gear except for jigging wen PR comes into its own, also when melting the trace into a mushroom don't put the flame directly onto it or let it go black and crunchy as when u apply pressure the mushroom will pop off if flame was In direct contact,u want to use bottom of flame the blue part to melt it,keep it close enough to melt but not to burn,so for casting the FG sure is easier on the guides and more streamlined, were as the PR is a bit chunkier and slowly but surely will pop one of those Fujii eyes out!

Ive been using a short Pr knot for yonks and my guides are fine....as long as your guides are big enough.Thats the issue....I find a short PR  quick to tie and never comes undone.....I use a 5 metre leader like Aaron and as long as you hang your lure down 1 to 1.5 metre from your rod tip,you dont even hear it go through the guides(right size guides).I use a little maverick bond when tied before i go out and i have 100% faith in my 1 inch PR knot.
I dont use a PR to jig with....prefer a short bimini double and wind on leader that i make myself.I can organise this in half the time it takes to tie a normal length PR knot.Only ever lost one jig to a couda and that was recently.
My mate showed me the FG knot the other day and his fingers went blueLOL
Once the idiots turn up..Im outta here...No time for Drama Queens.

Hi, I have got this fg knot pretty much worked out, I have been trying the Nomad type way where you apply tension to it after completing 2 half hitches after the wraps and then finish the knot with remaining hitches, I can put a heap of weight on it and it holds up great but I have noticed that once you have really stretched it out it becomes a little wrinkled up where the last wraps meet the hitches and bite in. It doesn't seem to affect the knot but is this normal ??

really works! superb
