Went out yesterday (Dec 27) from Hobson bay, first trip since August. Fished around Rakino, no interest in slow pitch jigs or squid softbait. Fell back to bait fishing with squid. Landed a couple of snapper 35 and 40 cm. Then headed off to D'Urville rock off Waiheke. Pretty sure the DoC boat? made to intercept me as I transited the Noises HPA. I was texting the missus so I was zig-zagging all over the show for a bit, so fair enough. Tried jigging around D'rville - no luck.

Not really a serious day out, had too blow the 'spiders' out of the boat, probably need to sort the battery out too. Fairly quiet out there in terms of other boats for this time of year.

Overdue post - out Tuesday last week.  First trip for a while, first since moving to Orewa. Out from Gulf Harbour - late start with visiting son who is not (or was not then) keen on fishing. Exploring with lures, north of Tiri, up towards Kawau.  Little action until 10am - turn of tide - when spotted some sign.  Kept 7 snapper between us, one at 55, the rest 35-40, no milky ones, on SPs, the biggest on a jig.  Rod holder did most of the work dragging new penny curly tail, but I'm not proud. Lots of dolphins out there. Long queue to retrieve at GH. Lovely day.

Haven’t been out a lot this year so haven’t posted a lot. Anyway me and my mate hit the water today around 9.30 out from Stanmore bay. Bit of a light southerly blowing so I thought ee would try the sand halfway across to Motuora. Picked up a 350mm amongst the 30 under sized snapper. Kept heading over to Motuora and fished the bottom end for another 350mm and another 30 under sized fish, still a lot of small fish around.

Wind dropped so we headed over to Tiri, picked up a good feed last time I was over there about 6 weeks ago. Nothing around wooded island so we thought we would run some drifts past shag rock, but not a lot going there as well.

So back over to the sand at the 25 metre mark. Got there at low tide so got setup ready for the current to come on, which it did and picked up 3 nice pannies dragging soft baits. As the current picked up a school of KYs showed up which was a shipload of fun and ended up taking 6 good size KYs home along with the 5 snapper.

Not a bad day in the end.

Thanks for posting, Kerry. A good honest report.
I was lucky enough to be invited out on a mate's boat out of Gulf Harbour a couple of weeks ago. Our trip almost mirrored yours - we really struggled to get decent fish on softbaits around the western edge of Tiri channel, the northern side of Tiri, the deeper zone in a direct line with Kawau, and over by Motuora.
We hooked a lot of smaller models, but couldn't buy a good one.
Neither of us know the area very well (he's just moved to Red Beach), so we struggled. If the fish were there, we'd have caught them.
The country we fished looked incredibly fishy, but we only just got a feed.

As part of a family outing to Motuihe on what turned out to be a stunning autumn day in Auckland, my 12-year-old and I got in a couple of hours' fishing. We tried Sargeants or whatever the channel is called opposite Cable Bay towards Matiatia entrance, then - having got only under-sized fish moved out towards Rakino.
The charter fishing near us off Church Bay pulled anchor, which is never a good sign.
Out in the middle ground between Waiheke and Rakino there was a huge area of kahawai busting up - sometimes in a large area of thrashing water, sometimes just individual swirls.
We only got a couple of legal snapper - on a Little Jack jig that imitated the anchovies nicely - but had a good time hooking kahawai. A range of sizes, from small to pretty big. All spitting out the silvery little fish. What was obvious was that our 4" softbaits were gigantic compared to the naturals the fish were feeding on. Of course, kahawai still hit the bigger paddle tails, but next time I'd probably downsize.
There were lots of tentative bites in mid water right down to the bottom (about 18m) and eventually they showed themselves to be jack mackerel. We caught heaps of them. I put one on a heavier set up as a livie in case there was a stray kingie following the action, but no takers.
A fun day on the water, but I'm at a bit of a loss for reliable small boat softbaiting spots out from my way with the closure of the entire Noises/David Rocks/Maria area, AND the western side of Motutapu where I'd normally be heading for anchovy workup action.
A shame.

Been a hard year on the soft baits, although I did catch a 12lb snapper off wooded island just before Christmas on a 5in bait Junkie.

I’ve done a lot better on the micro jigs this all be it small snapper, my thoughts are the smaller fish haven’t yet developed the predator instinct yet and just grab a micro jig because they are hungry and like the shiny flash.
