Easiest way would be to troll, then drop/cast the stickbaits back when you hook up on the trolling rods. Alabacore are not normally on the surface especially those winter models.

Alternately, look for vertical sub surface schools as you're trolling and then stop on th sign and work your stick baits.

was going to try jigs (so to fish a bit more depth) last season but didn't get the chance. will do so this season. has anyone tried slow jigs as these could mimic baby squid quite well? i heard of one guy catching an albie on a modified shimano key ring last season so perhaps they take most things when feeding hard.

One of the disadvantages of jigging is that it typically requires the boat to be above the school, which usually aren't static. A sinking small stickbait has the advantage of being able to reach some depth if the fish are sounding, but can be cast at schools without spooking them, a sinking popper with a small face like the fisherman popper pictured will cover a lot of bases.....

Caught a heap of them on Bottomships and Jitterbugs back in march trying to drop for snaps on the Ahipara banks. Most on the drop, a couple on the retrieve so they will definitely hit slow jigs (got frustrated with them after a while as it was like trying to get through kahawai in a Gulf workup LOL ).

Picked up 6 or 7 a couple of years back on Lucanus lures around an anchovy meatball out the back of the Mercs too- this was after trying with kingfish jigs first so the slow jigs are worth a go

thanks Alan, are you allowed to tie up to the wharves, or do you just drift off them?
