Just having a beer and a think. Not sure if albacore take stickbaits, but was thinking if anyone had tried at all to get one when they do their run around now when the big ones are running. I know they are hard enough to find, let alone get into a position to throw stickbaits at. Was just curious.

Albies are suckers for jigs ( caught plenty on jigs)so would think they would be all over poppers too

Kaveman, do you just get them as "by-catch" when targeting Kings? Seen one small one landed at the Aldies pins on a small jig but wondered if anybody has any gems for targeting them if they do turn up.?

i would think that around mayor island in september-november u would be looking for shearwaters and other birds like that flying around so i reckon if cast a carpenter bf 60-170 in squid colour they would nail it bcoz apparently at that time of the year there feeding on small squid.

yes, have mainly caught them as by catch jigging but as said in another post, trolling until you find them and then throwing stickbaits and or jigs works just as well.

Next good window i might target them on soft baits as they arent the best fighters in the sea, especially on game gear.

Out the mighty Manukau  catching big tuna on jigs is the best way. Jig around the bait schools. They take 200g jigs, so don't see why they wont take stick baits

They are suckers for a trolled rapala or the tuna killing Cedar plugs, so why not a stickbait

Yeah, I think the trolling to you find them is the good option. I guess the little ones would be a bit of a one sided affair, was thinking more the big winter models. Sounds like a 50-100g stickbait might be the go in a pink colour.

we have had some good size ones around 15k come up on our stickbaits while targeting kings, at schooner  they were all-over us for two casts but nothing stuck  was on a wee 60gram jiggle lure ghost green. they come in on them soo fast smack then down again, hard to hook, maybe trebles may have been the ticket.

hmm, was planning to head over to Tauranga next wkend with my new topwater set which hasn't beeen wet yet.
Maybe Schooner for a look then... worth targetting kings too or is it too early in the season? Will take my jig gear as well.
And and one more, can anyone suggest a good place to find livies in Tauranga harbour? (happy to be there pre-dawn if required)
so: livebait, jigs, topwater, trolling. hope of got my bases covered LOL

petethemeat,

livebaits: pre dawn sabikis along port of Tauranga wharfs, both sulphur point side and mt side.

some good kings at major at moment according to the reports on here.

Easiest way would be to troll, then drop/cast the stickbaits back when you hook up on the trolling rods. Alabacore are not normally on the surface especially those winter models.

Alternately, look for vertical sub surface schools as you're trolling and then stop on th sign and work your stick baits.

Albies are definatly suckers for jigs!! i have tried surface lures with little or no sucess.Only to tie on a jig drop and hookup straight away.

was going to try jigs (so to fish a bit more depth) last season but didn't get the chance. will do so this season. has anyone tried slow jigs as these could mimic baby squid quite well? i heard of one guy catching an albie on a modified shimano key ring last season so perhaps they take most things when feeding hard.

One of the disadvantages of jigging is that it typically requires the boat to be above the school, which usually aren't static. A sinking small stickbait has the advantage of being able to reach some depth if the fish are sounding, but can be cast at schools without spooking them, a sinking popper with a small face like the fisherman popper pictured will cover a lot of bases.....

Caught a heap of them on Bottomships and Jitterbugs back in march trying to drop for snaps on the Ahipara banks. Most on the drop, a couple on the retrieve so they will definitely hit slow jigs (got frustrated with them after a while as it was like trying to get through kahawai in a Gulf workup LOL ).

Picked up 6 or 7 a couple of years back on Lucanus lures around an anchovy meatball out the back of the Mercs too- this was after trying with kingfish jigs first so the slow jigs are worth a go

i remember a coast to coast mag a coupla yrs ago and milan and nikolaj were getting them on salt flys up to 20kg out behind mayor so no reason why stickbaits wont work.

thanks Alan, are you allowed to tie up to the wharves, or do you just drift off them?
