Caught a heap of them on Bottomships and Jitterbugs back in march trying to drop for snaps on the Ahipara banks. Most on the drop, a couple on the retrieve so they will definitely hit slow jigs (got frustrated with them after a while as it was like trying to get through kahawai in a Gulf workup LOL

Picked up 6 or 7 a couple of years back on Lucanus lures around an anchovy meatball out the back of the Mercs too- this was after trying with kingfish jigs first so the slow jigs are worth a go

One of the disadvantages of jigging is that it typically requires the boat to be above the school, which usually aren't static. Easiest way would be to troll, then drop/cast the stickbaits back when you hook up on the trolling rods. Alabacore are not normally on the surface especially those winter models.

Alternately, look for vertical sub surface schools as you're trolling and then stop on th sign and work your stick baits.

hmm, was planning to head over to Tauranga next wkend with my new topwater set which hasn't beeen wet yet.

Maybe Schooner for a look then... worth targetting kings too or is it too early in the season? Will take my jig gear as well.

And and one more, can anyone suggest a good place to find livies in Tauranga harbour? (happy to be there pre-dawn if required)
