I ruined a stick bait leaving it hanging on the rod like you mentioned...not good for the stickbait or the blank of the rod for that matter.Treat it like a jig.
Once the idiots turn up..Im outta here...No time for Drama Queens.

Gotta say I agree with PoppinTonga - A better way to clip the lures would be to attach the lure from the rod on the left, to the loop/clip of the rod holder holding the rod on the right... and continue with the rod one the Right attaching to the next holder down to the right...
 
This keeps the lures hooks etc away from the EVA and reels etc.. this is how I rig mine now...

Hi what happens if some one puts there hand on the gunnels and lands on a hook when the weather picks up? or falls over and lands on it?

Santa makes a good point.  Those rod holder are pretty, but there are some nasty hooks with the points facing up waiting to catch someone.  No beers on that boat Confused

For me I just wrap some large rubber bands around the rod close to the reel seat, easy to secure the hooks and lure safely as they can easily come off an eye and bracket with boat and rod movement...
