Hey guys I'm looking at buying a new heavy duty spinning reel for poppering/stickbaiting/jigging etc. I Would love a Stella or Saltiga but not for the price tag, so I'm undecided between the Shimano Saragosa 18000 and the Daiwa Saltist 6500. Just about all my reels i fish with are shimano. I had a Daiwa viento a while back and it was a piece of **** so I'm a little unsure about daiwa, even though I've heard only good things about their top end spinning reels. There's not alot of difference between the 2 in specs other than the gear ratio of 6:2:1 the saltist has over the Saragosa's 4:9:1, also more max drag with Saltist (33kg) Saragosa (20kg). So just wanting to hear from anybody out there who uses these reels and people's thoughts on them. Maybe there's something else worth looking at? I think the Saragosa retails for $500 at fish city, Saltist a little less maybe??

Think the saltist is 33lbs not kg, but anyway, what conclusion did you come to?

I fish a smaller saragosa 8000 (spooled with PE5) off the rocks and have caught some good kings on it up to 20kg but have also been absolutely smoked at the same time. 8000 has lower drag than the 18000 but I chose it as it wasn't as physically a big a reel which was important for me when used for long periods of casting.

One thing I note on them is that you really need to crank up the drag to get the max drag on them. They seem to go to a point where you think you are close to full drag but crank it some more and it really starts to lock up.

Been using a saltist 5000H for awhile now, It's no stella or saltiga but for the price I've been really happy with it. not as smooth to wind as the saragosa but much better drag, run pe8 on mine. haven't caught anything massive with it but has been given plenty of work outs on kings to ~23kg and fought 3 YF tuna in the 20-40kg range with no issues

I was looking into the saltist 5000 too, as per said I think the 6500 is quite a big reel and the 5000 still has the same 33lb drag as the 6000 and 6500.

33lb of drag is quite a bit, if you can imagion trying to pick up a full 10lt bucket of water that would weigh about 22lbs with your rod and reel its quite a fair bit of weight...

on the saragosa using 20kg of drag would result in the rod snapping in most cases unless you have a 37kg game rod broom stick so I don't see the need for such a HUGE drag,

Been using my Saragosa 18 for a while now and it has performed well on kings, haven't used the saltist so can't compare. Can't say I like jigging with it as I am still a fan of overheads but its choice for big livies and poppers.

all the 5000, 6000, 6500 saltists are the same reel, they have only different spool size... the 4000 and 4500 are slightly smaller, but again only different spool.

The daiwa catalina may be an option, its a saltiga with only a few less bearings, its the rebranded saltiga blast.. Ive owned one and put carbon drags in it.  If you have 12 - 15kgs of drag out of a spin reel  on topwater gear its usually ample. Because of the length of the rod you cant put the same drag over it as a jig rod. Two totally different animals. Also because the fish are on top of the water you usually have quite a bit more water column to play the fish. Buy the best you can afford thats the only advise id have.

agree with cbro... 3/4 drag is where your reel will run its best for a long time..

Not sure about Saragosa but Saltist has nice big chunky bail arm that is manually operated so no surprise accidental closures and subsequent disasters when casting.
Only when the last tree has died and the last river has been poisoned and the last fish caught will we realise we can't eat money.

And if the Saragosa is anything like my Stella it will!! IT WILLAngryAngry.  I have to make sure my handle is down low or when I cast the handle turns and closes bail arm...
