Most reels dont like it but you have some preventative measures
a)lie the rod and reel flat on a towel in a safe place away from spray.
b) Avoid travelling with rod and reels in rocket launchers if possible
c) If you must use rod holder/rocket launchers...either leave reel cover on like shimano neoprene ones or use shower caps(cheap option)...the shimano ones can be fitted to reel on the rod.
Keep them coated in inox to help keep salt spray out.

My 2 cents worth on the reels.....the higher ratio is only a factor for popping as when stickbaiting you are merely retrieving the lost line from the sweep and speed is not important and even at 4.9 to 1=Just wind faster for popping!
The drag on the sarragossa is the same as the spheros=dartanium drag and like jk said...most of it kicks in near the end....i found in the last quarter turn before lock up i found(spheros 14000FB).............If it were me....i personally dont like those dartanium ones and would change them out for carbontex ones.Wink....awesome.
p.s I have never had my stella 10,000 do the bail trip thing.Touch wood!

Hi All
 
Bought a 1800 saragosa new from local shop pre xmas. Has had a few kingys and when is working correctly is a good reel.. BUT it has been back in for a service twice in less than 6 months. They do not like getting spray on them and on my boat that is a fact of life.

We got hammered by GT's in Tonga and they performed no worries,
This model around 35+kgs

The saragosa 8000 was not an option for me as the line retrieve is far too low for a topwater reel. Since using my low ratio jig reel and comparing it to even my dirty 12000D bait runner I have realised that the less winding you do the better, so  a high ratio reel is far better. Just loo at the ratios of the top end dog fights etc.

I have a nice PE6-8 kilwell nano rod to pair it up with - very very nice light sexy rods these and like most I can't say enough about them. It will be good to finally pair it up with a nice reel and rid of the dirty 12000D.

Not bagging the saragosas at all, I'm sure they all work just fine and are proven fish catchers please don't get me wrong.

Everything you say makes sense but what do you have against the 12000D? (other than being heavy as hell) seems to be a decent reel for the price... just maybe not for topwater... ?

I imported a 6000 one year ago. It was my understanding the 5000, 6000,  6500 are all the same reel. The only difference between them was line capacity. You will find the 6500 is the lightest and the 5000 the heaviest. Guess they just machine a bit more of the spool for more line capacity. I put a blue Accurate T-bar on mine as the knobs they come with are awful. You will also find they have no roller bearing, they can be found on ebay.

Makes form some good reading Tomatron, and looks like you did some good research!  Out of interest - how much did you pay for the 5000H from Melton?  I probably would have gone with the same real as well, I like the Saltists - they are built really strong.

8 days in the post I it's on my door step. Pretty happy with the reel it's a shame the 4500 dosn't have more boogie as this would have been the size to go for but none the less. Got about 270m of 80lb whiplash hi-viz braid.
