The only fish you are not allowed to spear are spotted black groper and queensand groper. That said, we don't tend to spear marblefish, kelpfish, black angelfish, sharks, rays, most of the wrasses, drummer etc. There are plenty of good eating fish around. Butterfish are OK to eat and really good to practice on. Take what you can eat, leave the rest for next time.

Can't shoot great whites either - so just stick to bronzies and the odd mako if you're looking for a thrill.

My dad always bugs me to shot more marblefish. He really likes them.

Sun fish are fine as far as I know. That said I don't exactly target them!
I believe they are sometimes caught as a by catch by the commercial guys.

Back onto the topic of spearing great whites...

I was thinking, would a bigger gun like a RobAllen 120 or 140 be better due to more power to get through the tough skin and thick meat and more range to avoid the bitey bits.

or would a smaller more maneuverable gun like my Sporasub viper 90 be better due to the extra manoeuvrability. For example if the shark is holding me in its mouth, it might be possible to position the gun in such a way that I could get a direct shot into the brain.... But then, if I was in the sharks mouth, it is probably best to try and bite it inside the mouth for a quick kill and no time would be wasted reloading the gun.

you could try with a hawian  sling ,,pro dive made a real good one called a white pointer , they have come down in price now militaris  mine cost me 100 bucks back in the day  you can have a lend if ya want ,, make sure ya put that pronger in the tail tho so ya get a bit of a fight out of it , ya cant be waisting an opp to shoot a ride like that can ya  whats your personal size limit on this fish 1000lbs min would be mine
