You have to have a Firearms Licence.

As always, you must have a lawful purpose for carrying a firearm... we don't get too many pirates in these waters and there ain't bugger all out there that isn't protected from being shot at.
I have more respect for my firearms than to take them to sea - you'd want to give them a thorough clean afterward.

Wonder if Archery Equipment would be under the same classification, i wouldn't expect so but travelling with it may get up some coppers noses, i ask because i have just put an order down for a fishing kit to attach to the bow with some big knarly carbon arrows. The plan is to get some kingies teased up behind one boat while i take the shot from another, should be fun :D

Think Beagle is on the money - basically you need to have a Firearms Licence, then carry weapon safely on board i.e. unloaded, ammo seperate and weapon essentially disabled. However once on open sea and away from city limits, you could use it - however not to endanger others or cause a nuisance to the public. Some guy's carry guns on boats to fish, then go ashore in remote areas to hunt deer or pigs, goats etc, common around Sth Island areas etc, but also corromandel in patches etc. Personally I wouldn't bother unless doing something like that i.e. a fishing/hunting trip combined. You''ll also notice that in duck season heaps of guy's are in boats on the salt hunting ducks with shotty's but you can't travel over 5 knots in a boat with a loaded weapon.

We had a launch on Lake Taupo a few years ago,had a clay bird thrower on the cabin top.great fun on the way to the Western  Bays,lots pf fun and no law broken.

Spoke to the siss in law and she said that there is no problems with guns on boats as long as what (The Beagle) said is adhered to.
