You have to have a Firearms Licence. Boats, cars, what's the difference? As always, you must have a lawful purpose for carrying a firearm... we don't get too many pirates in these waters and there ain't bugger all out there that isn't protected from being shot at. I have more respect for my firearms than to take them to sea - you'd want to give them a thorough clean afterward. |

Wonder if Archery Equipment would be under the same classification, i wouldn't expect so but travelling with it may get up some coppers noses, i ask because i have just put an order down for a fishing kit to attach to the bow with some big knarly carbon arrows. You''ll also notice that in duck season heaps of guy's are in boats on the salt hunting ducks with shotty's but you can't travel over 5 knots in a boat with a loaded weapon. |

You boys need to read the history of TGFC. The commercial fisherman in the 20's and 30's out at Mayor where catching these big fish with beaks on their long lines and the story says they got a rifle out and waited for one to jump and shot it. We had a launch on Lake Taupo a few years ago,had a clay bird thrower on the cabin top.great fun on the way to the Western Bays,lots pf fun and no law broken. |

My grandad used to have a .22 on board to shoot the sharks they caught... one story was told that they got a big shark to the boat one day.. the shot went staight through the head.... AND the steel trace.... the shark sank away  well.. it would have been 30 - 40 years ago...
that is not a help to the current situation.. just a story Ha ha

frankly I see no reason whatsoever for me to have a gun on board. Never, no way in hell, would I have one on my boat
Would Sir Peter Blake still be alive if he had not grabbed his gun? Who knows but I think he would be.

Casting my mind back a couple of decades, I can remember being on board a boat with a clay launcher. We even had a bit of a shoot in Riko Riko cave at the Knights. Bit of a challenge as you could only see them when they dropped past the light coming from the entrance and the noise was pretty impressive.. |

Shot a few clays from a boat on lake Taupo, great fun. Hardly ever carry one on my boat, just sometimes. But golden rule of never mix alcohol and guns - so the guns are aboard a lot Hard one to call with Peter Blake...maybe if the second round hadn't jammed he could've continued his self defence properly, maybe. Dam shame, he was a great man.

Yeah, dont particularly think people would be dumb enough to mix the two, although ive been proved wrong by peoples stupidity in the past.
Not for a self defence thing either, thats what the left over burlys about and lets be honest, as long as Iti aint on the water that kinda thing is abit outlandish for NZ.. perhaps if this were Texas..

Hey
I guy was relating his experience re taking his shotgun to Gt. Barrier.
He was hoping to do some duck shooting & could not believe his luck when walking up the beach with his gear, a small group of ducks were approaching in his direction.
He dropped his gear, loaded his shotgun, fired & was amazed, as not being known as a particularly good marksman, to see three of them fall from the sky.
As he was "proudly" gathering them up & putting them in his belt, he thought they looked a bit smaller than normal.
At the same time a ranger came running to the scene & he only then discovered that he had just wiped out a significant % of a protected species, under threat of extinction.
The subsequent court appearance proved to be both unpleasant & expensive.

Im 22 have worked for 4 years in firearm sales, drink probably 5-6 bottles of beer a month, dont do drugs and take my firearms lic and rifle saftey seriously, i think im the only guy out of all my mate without any police conviction at all - only 2 speeding tickets so getting into rambo mode when someone lifts my cray pot or sum crap is not an option |

| from what i know a bang stick is counted as a firearm and i think is illegal - i could see a use for one, still use in america for land based shark and offshore shark fishing believe u can get spear for spearguns with a det head (pistol round that goes off on contact with fish} |

ok...I was thinking a bang stick might be handy when broardy drifting..in case the makos attack your fish at the boat... I see some charters and comm guys use small explosive charges ( basicly fire crackers ) and chuck them over as the broady gets closer to the boat to scare the makos..They would need a licence for those wouldnt they??

bows and arows are not illegal at all loyda there classed as a wepon of war , the coon next door shot my cat wen i was around 15 i then put an arow into his sky dish  the cops turnd up and could do notheing ,, eney body can by and have a bow ,, no age no restrictions  bow fishing is getting big now in nz aswell , man takes big blue with bow  would be cool at the way station , prob eseyer to get 1 off the rocks that way 2
