after recomendations for a new rod, after something in pe 5-8 range to match to saltist 5000h for now but prob a stella 10000 later, i know i really need a separate popper and stickbait rod but where im at, at the mo storage is limited, I use use poppers 60% of the time and sticks, 40%. so need something that can mange both at a pinch.

budget up to to 1 k max i guess. after something that that will mange yft to 50kgs or so.

been looking at the shimano caranax. what are they like? zny other other recomendations?

LOL yeah got to the stage where I copy stuff then send it to whom ever and get the box is full sign.

Josh I have one you can use rated to 80lb and has a very nice action, you can have it for buger all if its any good to you

Under a K you can get the smith 80P/35 or the GTK74 somethingarather.

The 80P/35 is a sweet rod, maybe a little stiff for smaller 60gm etc stickbaits though, but good as a stickbait/popper crossover and will take a fair bit of punishment, the GTK is apparently more of a stickbait rod which you need to be more careful about high sticking etc.

Getting stuff to central america is 50/50 but I would try the east coast american sites for the gtk or the 80p.

Los Suenos is probably a bit better than the Mexican or Panamanian ports.

 Ive got the gtk now and love it but it hasn't been tested on anything super large. sounds like a sick bite in CR right now. Maybe try Tony's builder up in Florida if you can find him the proper blank, we went to the factory in 09 and they put out some pretty rods

I had a large order disappear when it arrived in mexico and have just had the same problem over here in the Caribbean

Graeme, How different is this to the GOM Nev sent me? Was it a carbon blank? Had a nice weave pattern in the blank... Looking at this rod it would be a little lighter (grams)?

The GOM I fondled had a nice feel to it, I loved the thin grips and of course the finishing was ridiculously good...How is the tip on this one Graeme, soft enough for some stick baits?

Hi Sam,
The rod I sent you was a prototype at 7'2" using Kevlar. Basically because I have a small surtees I wanted a shorter rod for safety reasons but at the same time it had to cast stick baits (60g-90g) 70mts.  It dead lifts 20kg easily without the join failing, this took a bit of time to figure out as shorter rods are generally not good for casting. The newer GOM rods at 7'10" gave me a bit more flexibility with design as I could get the tips to cast a wider range of lures with the extra length.
As Graeme has mentioned even I can cast a 90g lure out past 80mtrs when we were testing them.
Most people will tell you need a rod at 8'4" to cast these distances but we asked people what weight lures they were going to use and what was their target distance. From there we deliberately designed the rod to be as short as possible so it would be easier to fight the fish once hooked.

Sam... as Nev mentioned this red GOM H rod is longer @ 7'10" and has a wider lure range designed for stickbaits, the Popper rod differ a far bit as they are stiffer in the tip so they can work the larger concave surface area of the lure through the water thus producing that rooster tail effect. Stickbaits have a totally different action and shape requiring the rod to have a softer tip designed for an even sweep to prouce the correct swimming action and recovery of the lure.
At 7ft 10in it's a long rod for us in terms of where things are heading... but the design of this rod is such that it will fold away in the heat of battle to reduce the hurt on the angler yet still have backbone and lift to handle anything that swims in our waters, Giant Southern Bluefin Tuna being the exception as a shorter rod is required for these beasts

Not wrong it is a stickbait rod. What ever Josh settles on will be a compromise as a Stickbait and Popper rod are two different beasts.
Popper rods are heavier in the tip sections so they can work the larger open faces of the oppers through the water to produce the rooster tail from the concave face, where StickBait rods are as a rule slimmer and lighter in the tips as the lures don't require the same energy to move throught the water to prodcue the swimming action.
That said a heavy rated Stickbait rod will work smaller faced poppers sucessfully

Yep, your right with the GOM rod but again it depends on the style and weight of the popper, the more water they are going to push the stiffer the tip. If he wants to spend up to $1000 he could get a blank/rod custom made rather than going for a compromise.
We have made blanks for Sail fish with very light tips to 8'6" throwing 300g poppers for GT.
You cant make a rod that will do it all, you need to know the size of the fish you are going to target and weight of the lures that you will use the most. Also most guys have a personal preference for length so when you put those three factors together it can be hard finding a rod sitting on a shelf that will fit what you want.
When Kojak was designing Popper rods with me we designed a rod with 3 different tip sections so he got around this exact problem. There is more than one way to get around this it just depends on what the customer wants.
