Having said that I am very interested in the GOM..... 

smaller cupped face through to things like yo-zuri surface bull and river2 sea dumbell kind of things mostly and stickbaits like 100gm nomad dogtooth for example, just been using a tcurve 15-24kg, it manages both fine though casting distance while ok could be better and the rods a **** to fight fish with esp when they go deep.

Yep, your right with the GOM rod but again it depends on the style and weight of the popper, the more water they are going to push the stiffer the tip. If he wants to spend up to $1000 he could get a blank/rod custom made rather than going for a compromise.

We have made blanks for Sail fish with very light tips to 8'6" throwing 300g poppers for GT.

You cant make a rod that will do it all, you need to know the size of the fish you are going to target and weight of the lures that you will use the most. Also most guys have a personal preference for length so when you put those three factors together it can be hard finding a rod sitting on a shelf that will fit what you want.

When Kojak was designing Popper rods with me we designed a rod with 3 different tip sections so he got around this exact problem. There is more than one way to get around this it just depends on what the customer wants.

Not wrong it is a stickbait rod. What ever Josh settles on will be a compromise as a Stickbait and Popper rod are two different beasts.

Popper rods are heavier in the tip sections so they can work the larger open faces of the oppers through the water to produce the rooster tail from the concave face, where StickBait rods are as a rule slimmer and lighter in the tips as the lures don't require the same energy to move throught the water to prodcue the swimming action.

That said a heavy rated Stickbait rod will work smaller faced poppers sucessfully

JoshW, What style of poppers do you fish? Large GT style or smaller cupped variety's?

At 7ft 10in it's a long rod for us in terms of where things are heading... but the design of this rod is such that it will fold away in the heat of battle to reduce the hurt on the angler yet still have backbone and lift to handle anything that swims in our waters, Giant Southern Bluefin Tuna being the exception as a shorter rod is required for these beasts

The rod I sent you was a prototype at 7'2" using Kevlar. Basically because I have a small surtees I wanted a shorter rod for safety reasons but at the same time it had to cast stick baits (60g-90g) 70mts.  It dead lifts 20kg easily without the join failing, this took a bit of time to figure out as shorter rods are generally not good for casting. The newer GOM rods at 7'10" gave me a bit more flexibility with design as I could get the tips to cast a wider range of lures with the extra length.

As Graeme has mentioned even I can cast a 90g lure out past 80mtrs when we were testing them.

Most people will tell you need a rod at 8'4" to cast these distances but we asked people what weight lures they were going to use and what was their target distance. From there we deliberately designed the rod to be as short as possible so it would be easier to fight the fish once hooked.
