When should a roller tip rod be used vs a normal tip ?
Is it related to line weight - if so which ?

My only uses for roller tips is for big fish that can scream off plenty of line under pressure, roller tips help avoid burn off and so long as you don't let the line run out sideways and scuff on the caseing you'll be fine
Second for me is big bottom dwellers or slug it outs in deep water when lots of pressure is applied time and time again at the rod tip.
I use rollers for 10KG and up when gamefishing.
I'm sure others will have more info
AC put it perfectly.
I use a roller tip on my 15kg. I know plenty of people though that are dead against rollers as they need to be lubed regularly and many people don't.
yup i agree with all that is said. dont listen to the dead heads to try to tell you that you can cast an spinning reel better with them on hahaha.

Peter, if there are plagues on the shops, I for one would be very wary of entering them. Which plague? Typhus or bubonic?
Another little hurray for eye tips as opposed to roller tips, is that if your line is being pulled off the rod tip at an angle, such as out to an outrigger or something, then a roller tip will do no good at all to your line, just the opposite. However, a good high quality tip ring does not matter which direction the line is coming off the rod tip.
My only problem I have with eyes is that a furiously wound-in swivel can punch them out if you are not careful. This is why if anywhere, I would use a roller tip for jigging, except then the wrap-around problem with the roler tip is worse. 6 of one, halfa dozen of the other I reckon (which is just abouthow many troling rods I have too, a dozen or so!
cheers, Stu.
Pete, you finished that nice new GUSA rod for me yet???
Fuji makes an AWESOME guide for that. it's a SiliconCarbide material. Harder than hell and disipates heat better than the space shuttle tiles.
Carbide is the next hardest material known to man. Diamond is first and Carbide is second
Fuji SiC tips!!!!
One of the items we have been introducedto via the mag is the Graphite USA range of guides, no silcarb, but something harder apparently. Pete Montague knows all about this stuff, I think they are titanium nitride or something... what are those gold and the holographic guides made outa Pete?
