He uses top quality guides and tips -not sure if they are ceramic, silicon carbide,or whatever. Reason being the same as Pete says about gaps etc, but even well lubed rollers can get hot or retain heat, which is not good for line. The newer 'normal' tips don't retain or build up anywhere near the same heat. Those bought up on rollers would probably dispute this, but advances in regular tips have very much evened the field. Rollers definately look the part tho, and as mentioned previously if well maintained do the trick. I have both on 37kg gear, and caught a 170kg Blue on the 'normal' tipped rod with the flash new style inserts. No probs. 6 of 1 etc.

Cheers .

Which plague? Typhus or bubonic?

Another little hurray for eye tips as opposed to roller tips, is that if your line is being pulled off the rod tip at an angle, such as out to an outrigger or something, then a roller tip will do no good at all to your line, just the opposite. However, a good high quality tip ring does not matter which direction the line is coming off the rod tip.

My only problem I have with eyes is that a furiously wound-in swivel can punch them out if you are not careful. This is why if anywhere, I would use a roller tip for jigging, except then the wrap-around problem with the roler tip is worse. 6 of one, halfa dozen of the other I reckon (which is just abouthow many troling rods I have too, a dozen or so!

cheers, Stu.

Pete, you finished that nice new GUSA rod for me yet???

As with any good custom rod the guides should be double under and triple over bound in a A thread

And if its money your worried about, skip one or two days on the water and put the extra into your tackle, no point going on an extra trip or two only to lose the fish to poor tackle and if your lucky enough to hook a decent one its odds on the cheap tackle will let you down---

Thiers a plague on the walls of a few tackle stores around that says it all "You can get away with cheaper tackle.
