Hi, Thinking about getting a light set up for top water, say Twin Power 5-8k HG or similar, and a PE-3 to 5 rod.

Don't expect to be able to stop huge fish with it.

Just seeing if many people are using these (and if so what combination of rod and reel), and would they also double up for Big Snapper/Stray Line set up and or Medium Livebait set up as well?

Just looking for something which can be useful for other types of
fishing if there is no top water action around.

I've been toying with doing the same, would run it as a PE3 set. The new Twinpower XD 5000XG looks awesome with decent drag and retrieve.

I'd love to get a Synit X24 or Yamaga Blanks Blue Sniper 79/3 to pair it with.

I have a couple that I use for big Kahawai and small Kings, 1 is a Twinpower 5000 and other is a Stella 6000. Both are on Shimano Ocea 732 30-40lb rods. Great fun casting into boil ups out at the Mokes. I am always casting sinking stickbaits and prefer the Nomad Madscads.

I've been using the Penn Ocean Assassin rod 7'4 PE 2-4 with the Penn Slammer III 4500 - it's an epic little combo for throwing little stick baits for Kings, real nice action and also use for Straylining...
 
The Assassin's great for casting as it has over sized guides and the little 4500 Slammer has 15kilos of drag - I've also dropped down to the 3500 for a bit of fun on the Kings which also has 15kilos of drag...
 
It's great fun alright have caught some nice 10-15kilo Kings on it...

I use Yamaga Blue sniper 77/3 Pe 2 -3  20 - 60gm and Yamaga bluesniper 100m Pe 1.5 - 3 jig 80gm plug 50 gm for shore jigging. Just switch the reel between two rods as its got Pe3 on it .so practical for either scenario

Some nice rod action there, I guess the larger guides are useful for the leader to flow through easily, do most stick bait rods have large guides?

The v shape is a 'land based buddy' rod holder.
These allow you to set yr rod down without putting rod or reel on rocks.
In theory anyway.
They can be a bit of a pain when casting sometimes but overall I find useful.

thanks for the reply, mate. Looks like a nice rod for off the shore. 

I bought one of those short NZ-made rock rod holders which wedge into crevasses in the rocks, and it seems to work okay with a stick bait rod when I need a break from casting, or need to put the rod down for some reason.

That looks ideal. Braid some times get caught in v thing.
Rod is probably a bit extravagant for off the rocks but got it at a good price from x forum member returning to Japan.
Lighter set ups are certainly a buzz and test the angler and more than often result in bust offs especially on mid to bigger kings.

That's a beaut anywhere, let alone off the rocks. Well done.

That 9' rod would be awesome for casting lures at some of the clean sand harbour entrances up north, and in some of the many harbour flats and estuary systems where kingies lurk. I'm trying to give that sort of fishing a real go, using light top water lures, and 30 or 50lb braid.
It seems to be a case of being in the right place at the right time, and I often don't get any customers. But when i get one, it's so rewarding.

I reckon you wont regret it S ray.

I love my Yamaga 75/4 matched with a Saragosa 6000.

Nice and light to cast and has handled kingis to 15kg so far.

Would be a good stick for lobbing big baits too although I haven't tried this myself. 
It aint no use if it aint chartreuse!
