Have been looking at getting a top water set, Wanting to spend around $450 for the reel and like the look of the shimano saragosa 1800 or the daiwa saltist 6000 or 6500. Opinions?

Can you stretch the budget a bit further, this might be a good option (not my auction).

Would you run 50lb braid on a reel that size?

no problems with 50lb on that reel, some use 50lb on a baitrunner 6500B....

I seem to recall John from Yeehaa catching his 41 kg King on stickbait with an 8000SW, using > 100 lb braid, but I might be wrong.Big smile

the Saragossa 18000 has more than enough grunt, but is a little on the the big / heavy side I find, and prefer to ue my Stradic 8000. Ideally I'd prefer 10000 or 12000 size. Depends to what rod your going to match to.

I use 50lb braid on a saragosa 8000 for top water fishing off the rocks and have landed kings to 20kg with it but also been dusted by a couple of BIG fish.

Good size reel in terms of weight etc but slightly undergunned for the bigger fish.

Don't think they do a 10000 or 12000 sized saragosa in NZ?

I own both the Saragosa 18000 and Saltist 6000. Because of gear ratio's I jig with the Saragosa and stickbait with the Saltist. Both reels have plenty of drag and are of solid construction. I was disappointed to find the saltist had no roller bearing and the handle/knob is better as landfill than anything else, though easily fixed with an after market bearing and a pretty blue accurate T bar. I run 80lb on both.

Top water I would choose Saltist between those two.
Saltist is high speed reel and it does much better job for top water.
I would not choose anything slower than (5.3:1) for top water.

your prob right there, 10000 for twin power or stella, that 8000 stella Aaron mentioned would be ace, plenty of drag there.
Off the bricks can be very unforgiving, no matter how much drag you've got a horse hasn't got far to run to freedom.

I use a saragosa 18000, choice reel, it is a little heavy, but I don't like to be under gunned when throwing $80 lures at the ocean

I have the saltist 6500 and it is quite heavy for casting... its more like a jigging reel. The spool is quite wide too which does not help casting long distance either... I'd go one size down...

Bear in mind the Saltist 5000, 6000, 6500 are all the same reel, just different line capacity. If you drop down to the 4500 to lose out on drag.

What sort of ratio is best for top water? What about a thunnus 12000, then I could have another spool with mono, and use it for snaps, and landbased

Have tested both these reels pretty thoroughly and would go for the saragosa 18000 first and without hesitation. Use should be considered (the saltist is higher geared) but from memory the saragosa has a slightly higher max drag (20kg) and at high drag settings (10kg+) it is silky smooth compared to the saltist. But you're getting quality either way.

What a load of useless advice....Firstly, the question is Saragosa or Saltist not Stella or Saltiga. Secondly, you are giving advice to not buy a reel based on something minor happening to a completely different model of reel. Thirdly, stating that he wont be happy with this reel as if it's some sort of fact is ridiculous and lastly if you bother to read the thread it clearly states that the saltist would be the better of the two reels in QUESTION based on gear ratio.

Awesome guys, cheers for the advice, it was all usefull to me. Yea 1 day I may upgrade to a stella, but this is my 1st decent spin set as I have pretty much just used overheads, and have an accurate for jigging, but wanted to give the spin a go, and some topwater fishing. I purchased a Saltist 6000H yesterday off figure fish. Got it for $380 with upgraded bearings and ball handle, and spooled with braid. So im happy, now to get a rod. Next post will hopefully be in the hall of fame!
