Have been looking at getting a top water set, Wanting to spend around $450 for the reel and like the look of the shimano saragosa 1800 or the daiwa saltist 6000 or 6500. Opinions?

Can you stretch the budget a bit further, this might be a good option (not my auction).

Would you run 50lb braid on a reel that size?

no problems with 50lb on that reel, some use 50lb on a baitrunner 6500B....

I seem to recall John from Yeehaa catching his 41 kg King on stickbait with an 8000SW, using > 100 lb braid, but I might be wrong.Big smile

the Saragossa 18000 has more than enough grunt, but is a little on the the big / heavy side I find, and prefer to ue my Stradic 8000. Ideally I'd prefer 10000 or 12000 size. Depends to what rod your going to match to.

I like the look of the shimano terez, have heard good things about them, and they are good value

I use 50lb braid on a saragosa 8000 for top water fishing off the rocks and have landed kings to 20kg with it but also been dusted by a couple of BIG fish.

Good size reel in terms of weight etc but slightly undergunned for the bigger fish.

Don't think they do a 10000 or 12000 sized saragosa in NZ?

I own both the Saragosa 18000 and Saltist 6000. Because of gear ratio's I jig with the Saragosa and stickbait with the Saltist. Both reels have plenty of drag and are of solid construction. I was disappointed to find the saltist had no roller bearing and the handle/knob is better as landfill than anything else, though easily fixed with an after market bearing and a pretty blue accurate T bar. I run 80lb on both.

Top water I would choose Saltist between those two.
Saltist is high speed reel and it does much better job for top water.
I would not choose anything slower than (5.3:1) for top water.

your prob right there, 10000 for twin power or stella, that 8000 stella Aaron mentioned would be ace, plenty of drag there.
Off the bricks can be very unforgiving, no matter how much drag you've got a horse hasn't got far to run to freedom.

I use a saragosa 18000, choice reel, it is a little heavy, but I don't like to be under gunned when throwing $80 lures at the ocean

I have the saltist 6500 and it is quite heavy for casting... its more like a jigging reel. The spool is quite wide too which does not help casting long distance either... I'd go one size down...

Bear in mind the Saltist 5000, 6000, 6500 are all the same reel, just different line capacity. If you drop down to the 4500 to lose out on drag.

What sort of ratio is best for top water? What about a thunnus 12000, then I could have another spool with mono, and use it for snaps, and landbased

Have tested both these reels pretty thoroughly and would go for the saragosa 18000 first and without hesitation. Use should be considered (the saltist is higher geared) but from memory the saragosa has a slightly higher max drag (20kg) and at high drag settings (10kg+) it is silky smooth compared to the saltist. But you're getting quality either way.

Be patient, save a bit more money and buy a stella.....I looked at a saragossa but noticed that the body was very similar to my spheros i had before.....I had problems with body parts falling off my spheros,so that put me off....Dont dik about like i did....Dont buy something you know you wont be happy with in the long run and then have to sell it to buy a stella.....hunt for a second hand sw 10,000(by the time you have saved up the dosh, one will come up)....800 to 1,000 in good nick. Its worth that bit extra....very nice to use and heaps of grunt.Wink

What a load of useless advice....Firstly, the question is Saragosa or Saltist not Stella or Saltiga. Secondly, you are giving advice to not buy a reel based on something minor happening to a completely different model of reel. Thirdly, stating that he wont be happy with this reel as if it's some sort of fact is ridiculous and lastly if you bother to read the thread it clearly states that the saltist would be the better of the two reels in QUESTION based on gear ratio.

Awesome guys, cheers for the advice, it was all usefull to me. Yea 1 day I may upgrade to a stella, but this is my 1st decent spin set as I have pretty much just used overheads, and have an accurate for jigging, but wanted to give the spin a go, and some topwater fishing. I purchased a Saltist 6000H yesterday off figure fish. Got it for $380 with upgraded bearings and ball handle, and spooled with braid. So im happy, now to get a rod. Next post will hopefully be in the hall of fame!

BAKED.....are you always this judgmental with people?LOL..I guess you dont own a stella then?LOL
The guy asked for opinions on a top water reel and was tossing up between the two reels he mentioned...I gave my opinion on my experience....I personally dont like reels made in malaysia and i have bought a fair few.
I stick by what i say...you only get what you pay for and you never regret paying for quaility.
Many have done what i said and then sold their reels and bought a stella....I use mine on the rocks as well as boat and if you look after them you can keep them tidy like i have....
To the thread poster=good luck with your choice but 400-500 bucks is a lot of money to spend on a reel too.just like 800-1,000 is...i spent 400-500 and ****ed up.Found the spheros had internal problems too ...Hence the advice.Wink

"Yea 1 day I may upgrade to a stella, but this is my 1st decent spin set."
My point is here mate that you will lose money on this reel one day when you sell it,if bought new(just like the person who has just sold it to you) and then you just buy another reel......my advice was to not mess around when you know in the long run you want the best........however...you have a good score there and who knows, you might well be perfectly happy with that reel....and that my friend ,is totally your call !       good luck with it...all you need is  a good rod nowWink

How do you mean undergunned there JK? Drag, capacity? I run a Shimano 8000 size ( sustain) and think it's got sufficient drag and capacity for off the rocks. They pack alot of drag for me to hold onto and effectively fish from the rocks. Do you think a larger reel would have saved you?
I personally rekon it's part and parcel of LB fishing, just kinda tough from the rocks when they get up and boogie, and found less drag in such scenarios will better stop their runs and settle them down often rather than dialing it up.

From the two reels in the question

Saragosa +1

My 18000 is an awsome reel. You don't need to spend extra money to catch a fish bro, sure the stella is nice, but its not going to land anything that a Saragosa wouldn't straight out of the box in NZ.

Great reel, very nice drag.

Only down fall, is the silly cosmetics fall off.....

Fin nor offshore 9500 is another option $300 approx, a little heavy but one tough reel (27.2 kg max drag).

I would choose a Saltist over a saragosa if to choose out of those two though and only saying that because i just watched big angry fish again LOL.

I don't think LBD's advice is foolish...

The "Stella" always seems to ruffle feathers, but if a budding topwater fisherman takes LBD's advice they will be in good steed.

LBD is WAAAAYYY off the mark if you read the initial post - $450 budget. Some of us have families and budgets, or in my case I blew last weeks wages on male escorts.

I have the Saragosa 18000, but want a Saltist 6500 (tackle envy syndrome methinks), and find that this budget CAN work well,  just not for chasing Tongan monster GTs, or Ranfurly 35kg freight trains.  18000 also swaps to a 180g jig rod for vertical kingfishing at a stretch.

But how many of us ever go to these places regularly ? (When I occaisionally do, I use the Skippers Stellas LOL)

I took the good advice of Yeeha, who understand my budget, my skill levels, local fishing areas and my patterns, and they have not put me wrong yet.   A Stella is simply not the only reel that can land inshore kingfish.

LBD.. raghhh raghh, wander off topic.....rant, speling mustakes,  more rant, ...Stella, off topic (yet more dots) followed by a grunt.

Tipper...the idea of this forum is for everyone to have their say without some judgmental prik come down on them(making it personal)...my advise had its place and was to the point(like sam said)..unlike yours, which is just plain rude.Cant you be friendly? Or is it beyond your brain capacity?
