Heres a good picture of where access is denied, i was up there around New Years and the road out past Matai was blocked by Maoris, (i am guessing demanding money) to get any further.
Best bet would be to boat in, wouldn't want to risk leaving the car at Matai so maybe Whatuwhiwhi? Either way would check with locals before camping any further than Matai, you can camp at Matai Bay so if staying there maybe it wouldn't be too bad then boat up the coast, (easy beach launching) i think as long as the holiday makers are there you would be fine with safety of vehicles etc I only went out for a look and beautiful place it is pity the road block made me so irate i  couldn't enjoy it as much.

hey deacs - did it look like they were letting people past who were willing to pay? I'd be happy to pay to access across, if it were their land that were the case. I thought that there was simply no access at all, which would be any legit land-owner's right to impose, if they wished.

it does sound like there is a bit of agro associated with it though.

why would you not leave your car at Matai? thought that was a pretty family oriented DOC camp out there?

I am pretty sure no one owns access to the beach Aaron. It was the way they went about it, big road block, shut fence with Maori symbols on it, with 3 guys standing behind it, I am pretty sure they were letting people through though, didn't really stay around looking at it for long. I am unsure of actual ownership rights up there. On the other hand we drove through to another remote place with private access all they had was a box saying donations for the road, i know where i will be putting my money....
Why wouldn't i leave stuff at Matai: Have you read many other stories about trying to get access up their and then also people having things stolen? i have no doubt in summer it would be a great place to stay. I would not stay or leave my stuff there if there wasn't plenty of other people camping, just the feeling i got from the place and from past stories, it was a pity as i was hoping to not be able to confirm the feelings/experiences other people have had.
Anyway lets not let my thoughts ruin Scuzzys thread I have only been there once.
Scuzzy I would check with DOC first before venturing out there, as the map shows you can't access there by road as it is prohibited so doubt the hut would be open for the public to stay in but who knows would be awesome if you could!

You haven't been able to get up that road past Matai towards the cape for ages Deacs, not since I've ever been up there, admittedly that's only going back 6 or 7 years though. Always gate across and private property signs etc.

Might have been letting locals through to their houses etc... ?

Yep best way to do it scuzzy if you are in the know with the locals you will have no problems.

trust me boz it wasn't just a gate that they were only letting locals through, i am pretty sure i could see what was going on.If there is a lighthouse that works and a doc hut wouldn't it mean its DOC land? Then again that doc hut may be the one that the "extremeist" who threatens to shoot people has claimed for himself

just spoke to mate who is a farmer up there and his words were- if you value your life and belongings go by boat, and there is a guy living near the light house that will cause you grief , how ever if you contact the local iwi they will give you a pass($$$$$$$$$$$$)  but that does not guarantee  you or your gear will be safe, I will still investigate this further as there is always away around things sometimes one just has to play the game to get the out come required

Scuzzy if you get stuck you can lend my LBG yak on the way up to access spots I will also give you a spot or two to try. Wink Been up there a few times never had any issues touch wood apart from my mate having a stone thrown at his car. If it gets bad just fish off the yak LOL

If you have access to an IRB there's no point at all in going any further than Matai. Matai is perfectly safe and if you're worried park your car up the top of the camp by the DOC office.

All good.

Keep up with those stories, they are great, they keep a lot of people away. The limited authority access is great, it keeps it a special place. Each time I have been up there I go to a local's house. The people that live there are part of the local hapu and act as part of the collective kaitiakitanga for the rohe. They have always appreciated the fact that I come to them firstly, introduce myself, have a korero and ask permission. A bit of koha always goes along way.

I find it hard case that each time Karikari comes up in discussion here there is misconceived undercurrents that run with it. I find it even more bizarre that predominantly the people who know and understand about issues the least, whatever it is,  have the most hardened opinions on such. DOC is commonly known as Depatment of Confiscation in the North. The local hapu and DOC works in partnership and yet some issues and land claims/ confiscations still go unjustly unresolved. I believe that there is more than the odd 'pakeha' land 'owners' who do not like people traipsing across their land without permission. I know I'd be piassed if people walked across my back yard, doing whatever and going wherever they choose, unannounced. Imagine a good fraction of Auckland holiday makers ignorantly doing so in your backyard over the summer.

Do as you do, but just remember the far north have a healthy appetite for certain life forms. I guess it depends what window you look out of, and guess I'm just lucky as my shades are rose tinted.

some good comments there fish i,I agree with alot of what you say,I have gained private access to alot of areas in NZ by doing so, also find honesty is the best policy when it comes to land owners as well, also  not to abuse the access,
I will contact the local iwi up there and chat with them then arrange to meet up, just finding the right people so will chat with some mates up that way first to find out.
