Hey mate,
I'm up around KariKari for the next week, and hoping to do the odd dive. I don't have any boat or kayak, so will have to be walking access.
I've been looking at left side coopers beach, maitai Bay, and Whatuwhiwhi to be potential spots.
You mentioned in a previous post having some okay spots accessible by foot, do you mind sharing the Intel?

The karikari peninsula is a beautiful spot, I've fished up there a few times now, once camping at Matai bay and the other times day trips whilst staying in Mangonui. It's possible to access karikari beach for a surf cast by turning left just after the matai bay turnoff but before you get to the gate marked private property. Maybe I've been lucky but I never had any problems whilst fishing up there. My last time there in June 2011 I met a couple who lived in one of the houses further up the peninsula who were out for a walk on the beach and gave them a 40cm pannie I caught whilst we were having a natter ( I was after bigger stuff for club points). Had a pod of dolphins cruise past another time.
Love fishing that beach and will definitely head back again.

i bet scuzzy is thinking...why did i ever start this thread... i think this forum is becoming a hunting ground for people who cant fish and wish to criticize others. before this forum came about for me i had no way of knowing what was happening around the country (except for fishing news which is a month later)

I know quite a few access which require a donation or toll to use. Also know of more then a few locked gates, many thanks to DOC.  All in the South Island.

Funny how if you go to any coastal areas in the South Island this sort of thing doesn't happen?

Ive also heard they limit access because of so called crops they have hidden away...

Haven't heard of many people getting grief when just parking at matai (or any other public access or DOC area) and fishing there. More when people might park there and wander across private land etc to get to fishing spots. Fished up there alot in my younger years with the old man without issue. Would again but just need to go the right way about it.

Permission when crossing any private land is key and whether its by koha or just popping in to say hi then so be it. You simply do it if ya want to fish there. Otherwise fish elsewhere.

As a kid we use to stay up in Nartaki Hohora and we had a ball with the locals as you say treat everyone as you would want to be treated yourself, 9 times out of ten it works.
