Having only started game fishing in February, Im unsure as to when I should start pulling some string. Im in tauranga so was thinking early to mid november for tuna? Or is that too early. Any tips would be appreciated.

Ill be keeping an eye on the SST's late November and calling on a few key contacts around the traps to see what the skippies etc are up toooooo.
 
My bones are telling me that it will be early this year LOL, but then that just may be novice anticipation blinding me. Ive nothing better to do at that time of the year anyway so why not give it a crack early ?

I went out in early Nov last year hooked a yellowfin, eveyone said oh na it must have been an alby, I no what a yellowfin looks like, any way a week later or so, elrobbo and phad got fins

There's no reason why a keen gamefisher can't target the black marlins that swarm around Anchorite rock during the winter.

Nobody has ever come up with a great idea after a second bottle of water.

Now thats a plan for thursday Bushpig :) In at bayswater , 1.5hrs up to North east of Takatu and drift all the way back with big Livies. Thumbs%20Up  Might at least get the 1st Club Pin for a decent shark LOL

Hi Biggear
If you look back through here the Albies started running this time around Mayor last year. Weather is about three weeks behind this year, this is the first spell of good weather for a long term versus last year when the water had cracked 16 degrees already (only 14 degrees now) so might be a bit behind this year. A few easterlies systems should sort that out, and looks like some more east next week.
As far as the big fellas go, keep an ear out for the first fin running Nov/Dec, but to be honest the marlin seem to be in more numbers, more concentrated and closer to shore at the tail end of the season....not many people fishing late through til May but they were there.....
Can't wait!

mate just so you know there is no wrong time, from november onwards we set off in hope of a stripy, it just means going a bit further than one would earlier in the season.

most wait to get out there me i just like to walk the talk and go do it, the odds are against you but sure as god made little green apples you have more chance on the water than sitting at home.

heres a tip for you, start sorting things out as the season closes in, i am already rigging lures as i have a couple and am retying doubles and making windons.

wont be long until i will be going up and down the harbour towing plastic, this just to set the power-gum loops for the coming season, no good doing it when you should be watching gear rather than sorting it.

I have a very simple saying and its simply called the 7 Ps.

I do ok but i also put in a shet load of prep prior to the big event, just ask anyone who has come out with me, oh and practise filling the lungs so you can bellow that is all.

Thanks for the adivice guys. Im gonna hit it in november anyway. Ya never know your luck. Just gotta get a heap of gear at the boat show to ensure im covered on that front.

Geez mate,  depending on what you are after I wouldnt be relying on a boat show to buy gear. If you have a look at trade me at the moment there is a heap of great game gear going at good prices and based on experience there will be a heap more being  put up over the next little while.
 
I would also suggest putting a list of what you are after up on the forum B & E and I think you would be surprised what will be offered.

Out of interest, whats the earliest people on here have caught a marlin and out of how many? That may give a true indication of early season chances. If fuel was cheap then sure, but if you want return for investment then do the maths.
For me, out of 188marlin, the earliest was on the 1st of Jan 1995. Hense with 0% for Nov and 0% for Dec, school snaps are where its at over that time.

1st official marlin for NZ I believe was 31st dec ?
 
Wetspot was 3rd December T& R Striped Marlin and started fishing 27th december with the 1st YFT coming on board the day before.
 
Ill certainly be out poking my nose around late November

what with a good number of big eye out yonder, if you pput the time in I recon people would be suprised, but with nz weather and fuel, its just a waste of thought...

27th Dec season before last I think I got more of a fright than it.  Had a couple of knock downs between xmas and new year off the brett last year as well.  But they certainly weren't leaping in the boat...

Big eye you say... and how would one find them?  I seen three big huas on the back of Predator '97ish around april caught off the surville canyons.  We lost a big fin 60-70kg ish the next day in a similar area and saw some very "big" skippy splashes and porposing tuna in the distance but never came up on em.

But they are the only ones I have ever seen.

What does a man / boy have to do to track em down? in winter...

they seem to get em at the rise, could be well worth a look but the ones i have heard recreationaly have been hooked when targeting broadies.
