Hey,

I'm new to the site but have a had a Beastmaster for the last three years and have had no complaints until this weekend. I hooked up on a reasonable ky and the tip broke off where the hollow section leads into the solid section.

I have previously caught much bigger fish on the same rod. The drag was not set too tight, the only reason I can think it failed is that the rod has weakened over time. The rod was kept in safe storage and no damage was evident.

Anybody else had the same problem? Also I can't remember if Shimano gave 5 year warranties in 2005 when I bought the rod, will ask at my local tackle shop but if anybody knows I would appreciate it?

I am now looking for a new rod and would like to stick with a two piece, however, many of the high end rock rods are less than 10ft and are one piece. I find the two piece easier to carry when climbing down rocks etc.  I am keen to get a rod with the quality of Kilwell/Offshore, does anybody have any suggestions,

Beastmaster 10ft rock rod $100 softer tip
Penn Powerstick 10ft $100 more solid tip
rodworks LBG rods 10-15kg 8ft (2pc) $300
rodworks LBG 15-24kg 8ft (2pc) $320

Theres not many 2 piece rods around the $200 mark, maybe go custom made?

Most of the rock rods I have are between 7 and 8ft 1 piece and have no trouble going down cliffs with them - no broken guides on them ever.

It's a beefy reel agreed JK, but like Moocha said, just because it can be done. Oh it gets better also gonna do the same to the Okuma Aexon AX90 Longcast I've just got as well. Figure it can be done, why not, won't do any harm doing it. Plus the drags are from the guys who brought out those weird graphite rods which you bend and tie a knot in, the GT's, they also make and will install the drags.
Nothing makes a fish bigger than almost being caught.

I have seen a two piece Killwell Limetip Texalium 8ft 6' 10-20kg in Stirling sports $300.00. I am keen to buy, anybody have any experience of these rods?

Have got a Penn 9500, which should match up, any comments?

Mate if you can pick up an older second hand Penn Powerstick off trademe or wherever then do it, the older models have the mean as powerful tip, I prefer that way way more than the softer tips of the Beastmaster. Maybe just a personal preference but I know I'd rather have power over sensitivity when that big red is trying to run you into the kelp.
The newer Powersticks have a softer tip for some reason so I can only assume they have changed how they make them or sourced different blanks.
Love my Powerstick PS1402 Hug
Probly not the best for kings though as it's long and you wouldnt be able to get the butt into a gimble

They are very similar to the Kilwell Rocky just in a two piece, me personally I just dont like 2 piece rods of that sort of length and line weight, maybe its just because there are so many poorly designed 2/3 piece shorter rods.

Limetips generally have the hard chrome guides ( bottom picture) which are easy to break on the rocks, if they have decent guides (top picture) not a bad buy. I'd check out the Rodworks ones at fishcity if your wanting to spend $300 on a 2 piece.

Not sure if Tiny (Synit Rods) have made there LBG rods and if they are 1 or 2 piece but theres another option.

or buy a 1 piece and get a professional to make it a quality 2 piece rod.
Matt from Just fishing transformed my Shimano backbone 8ft LBG rod from hard chrome guides to this thing of beauty!

Not bad for a $100 rod then add on workmanship and you have a rod worth well more than it cost SmileSmileSmileSmile

Thanks for the advice, the rod has got the decent guides.

I already have an offshore boat rod and want a change. Also the two piece will go in the boot of my car out of view.

Having asked a few tackle shops for advice on the 2 piece/1 piece situation they also have said that they would stay away from poor quality 2 piece rods but so long as you go with a good maker such as Kilwell/Offshore the 2 piece should not make any difference.

I think I will buy it.

levin large 1,

The method for attaching the guides looks a bit Heath Robinson (uk terminology for cobbled together)?

Looks like gaffer tape?

So JK, I'm going to take your advice first but, Apart from the 'Rocky II', What else would you reccommend? Or is there anything else to think about for under $250.
Yes it was me, I screwed it up for everyone.

Any of the killwell or offshore stuff is pretty good mouthu. Like levinlarge i also prefer the 1 piece rods, even up to 10foot. Dont find them much of a hassle to transport either.

Smellyfingers - hope you are not talking about the rod of levinlarges in the picture? It's a quality job there thats for sure!

I hope Matty doesnt read this, If your ever on the North Shore go check out "Just Fishing" on Wairau Road and you will see that these guys really know there stuff when rod building or anything else for that matter, which many will attest too.
