This will get you going - but earlier this yr, grad daughter and BF came over to Vtu for a few days. They both had a 21st withing a week of each other. His present from Lil was a trip on Nambas - my charter mate's boat. He just charged gas money.
We got about 6 I think.
But at least 5 were on laser pros, one (the biggest) was on a popper when the bite went quiet.

We put in some hours today, chasing the yellowfin off the Manukau. Heaps of bait from about 50m out, heaps of birds diving(especially 70-85m) not much action on the lures. We did see a couple of yellowfin (one small, one really good size) and had one hookup which came off as we cleared the other gear 😞 Won't forget the sight of a big barrel launching out of the water only a few meters away from the boat

Wow! this thread has got me thinking about having a crack at this trolling thing (I've got a lot to learn).

A mates teenage daughter got a nice YFT out the back of the Aldermans around 3 weeks ago (He hasn't got one yet - but he was skipper).

Had a go today behind the Hen and Chicks out towards the Mokes and then north a bit around the 150m line. No takers but a mint day out there. Water temp around 22-23 degrees. Cant catch one if you dont have any gear in the water. Plan to have another go soon.

I'm very uneducated when it comes to YFT (and game fishing in general) BUT I've collected a lot of the gear ...

Any suggestions for where to head over Waitangi weekend?  We will be departing from Gulf Harbour and could spend a couple of nights out - maybe coming in to Great Barrier for the night? (don't think my partner would be keen on being out too far over night).

Had a couple more goes in Feb while up at Whatuwhiwhi and Matauri Bay. Water was still around 21+ degrees but no takers. Others saying was pretty slow out that way while we were up there. Nice way to spend some time though. Any luck Tonto?

Wow - we never got 21 all summer. Down to 16.5  max now. Our gamefishing is done.
Different world up there. Our season sth of Napier is super short - weeks, not months.
Make the most of it. It won't last much longer?

For most of that area the 100m line is not very far out and I believe most gamefishers up North are spending their time out past 200m. Interestingly we consistently had a 1 degree temp lift as we went past the 100m line. One guy who I had a chat with at Whatuwhiwhi had taken his trailer boat out to the 505 and said it was over 23 degrees out there. That was 3rd week of Feb.

Temp breaks (to me) can be more important than higher temps. At the point you get mixing water, I would spend some time lokking around there. Does your sounder plot the temp for you - on the screen? As soon as I find wobbly bits I pay attention.
I caught my YF a few weeks back in around 19-19.5 (can't remember exactly). If they were just looking for warmer water, it wouldn't have been down here.

Alan L my sounder doesnt plot temp just shows what current sea temp is at the boat. I keep an eye on it as we are trolling along.
Good luck for Sunday Tonto.

My Lowrance plots it , but it is not the best graphic. I tend to just watch the numbers also.
One of my 2 mates has I think a Furuno - near top of the line. He gets a brilliant trace of the temps - we tend to watch that more than anything. Anytime it gives a squiggly line, there is usually something interesting going on. Birds or baitfish on the sounder.
We will spend some time cruising around it - trying to find the boundaries etc, In the absence of any other sign, it is a pretty good reason to stay in that locality. At least until you are sure your target fish is/or is not in that area.
Alan
PS - I have to tell my sounder to plot it. It is not a default setting. But an option I can overlay on the sonar plot.
