Guys if you want to use a teaser to bring kings up then get onto mark at decoro and ask about the Patriot design lures. Believe me at this stage there is nothing that i have seen that wroks better as a kingie teaser.
They are so good i was relcutant to even post this. |
This has given me an idea Mark...
Our Kings here in Cape Town are generally a topwater fishery, with jigs being a loooooong way behind... while our kings are nowhere near your sizes, in fact a 10 kilo fish here in the Cape is a trophy, we do get large numbers in the 4 to 6 kilo class, with a few fish pushing 8 or 9 kilos in the mix... while obviously smaller fish, matched to the right gear ( PE 2 and SB gear ) they are a blast, especially as its mostly a sight fishery.... 99% of our fish are caught on smallish plain silver spoons wound fast and straight... the faster the better... but as is typical of our kingies, you'll get 20 casts in with anything from 1 to 10 fish chasing your lure to the boat without hitting, before you get a fish to eat.... we boated 40 odd fish on Saturday past, where if we had hooked even half the fish that chased our spoons, we would have been looking at 150 plus fish... frustrating to say the least!
I have tried all number of fancy japanese lures, stickbaits, floating and sinking, SB's, weighted and unweighted.... no joy... unless its being wound stright and fast, the Kings aren't interested....
For ages I've been looking for a "secret weapon" to get these frustrating fish to commit more often rather than only 1 in 30.... these fish don't know a premium bait when they see one!!!
Our fish being alot smaller probably won't react kindly to a big prop bait like the PD version, and as our fish are mainly feeding on small anchovies, I reckon I might have to sneak myself into the bass fishing section at a local tackle store and pick up a few dying flutters, and upgrade the hardware and see how it goes...
Those of you not familiar with the "Dyling Flutter" its a classic bass fishing topwater, from Heddon ( same company that gave us the Zara Spook ) which has props both front and back, and comes as a version with just the rear blade.... might just be the right way to go....
Might also be worth looking at the Peacock Bass lure classic, the Wood Chopper and Amazon Ripper... These baits are built to withstand Peacock Bass abuse, so "Should" be pretty tough with upgraded hooks etc...
Not sure if they will survive the class Kings you guys are blessed with, but they should handle our little guys no problem!
Cheers
