hey fellas, I am after info, yes over the years I have caught probably more than my fair share of kings nothing over 30k but here's hoping, anyway I have a question
when you out chasing kings with the sticky baits what area's do you target, or do you hunt them down or blind cast in the hit and hope thing, I would be very interested to hear from guys who do well at this as other than a very few rats I have never got a decent king on a popper.
so please fire away as it will help a some what novice at this sort of fishing.

I've done buggar all of this type of fishing as well but always thought that a sweet idea would be to run unarmed marlin lures (teasers) around headlands and the usual sorts of haunts and once the fish are located/raised....knock the boat out of gear....tease the bejesus out of them till they're white hot then start firing poppers/stickbaits in to the mayhem......dunno might work but probably goes against some stickbaiting code of ethics or perhaps already a normal practice?....reckon you'd get some pretty awesome visual bites thou especially in calm waters.....
...and an added bonus of trailing teaser lures and warming up a crew for the real deal (T&S) on marlin?....
EDIT - just thinking about this a bit more....instead of knocking the boat out of gear straight away you could effectively 'lure' them out from gnarly terrain in to more suitable country?

Bait fish coming close to the surface ( 0-20m down), over reefs , teasing them is a good idea , using birds etc

Is the tease idea something that already happens Legacy?

Land based fishing the usual deepwater / good current ledges, livebaits out, casting out and also along the face of the ledge with the bigger stickbaits on the weed line.
Well that's my plan for the upcoming season from the rocks.

I'll be watching this thread with interest too.
Have found it a difficult transition from jigging to topwater in terms of finding spots where the kings frequently come up to the surface. But I've also haven't been that patient and to easily fall back on jigs.
Its also easier to position the boat with jigging as your sounder tells you what's directly beneath the boat and you can get jigs down to them quickly.
There probably is a code of ethics but I'm not into that BS......... Would definitely prefer just to get out there casting but I'm starting to like the idea of anchoring up at a certain point and dropping 50kg of burley
I don't think anyone has convinced me that topwater is the most successful way of catching kings, but the visuals are cool and using those long rods evens up the fight a bit and pushes you harder. Add that to the fact that working stickbaits and the lures themselves are a bit of an art form it makes for some mean fun.

Mark from Extremesportsfishing talked about it on his talks , using lures , birds or even a stickbait , we've often towed one around , moving spots , several people I know have hooked up doing this. I rekon a string of birds or a couple off each corner of the transom would be good , get the kingis looking up.

From the stick baiting and popper fishing Mike and I have done 10 - 20 metres over drop off reefs foul, and the usual places like bouys and channel markers. Drifting has worked best for us and when "looking" casting both sides of the boat whilst drifting gives you a pretty big look. If the Kingies are there the response is usually instant, with often multiple follows. It really is very visual, energy charged way of fishing. There have been times we have had 20 - 30 king chasing, shouldering each other out of the way. They are usually 8-15kg but we often see much bigger beneath them. The trick I guess is getting to those bigger fish. I have used them off the bricks, that have brought the kingies into the live baits.
Best fish I have hooked on popper was last week which was a solitary fish that just smoked me before the hooks pulled.
------------- If I'm not taking photos I'm fishing. If I'm not fishing I'm taking photos, either way I'm having fun.

Guys if you want to use a teaser to bring kings up then get onto mark at decoro and ask about the Patriot design lures. Believe me at this stage there is nothing that i have seen that wroks better as a kingie teaser.
They are so good i was relcutant to even post this.

Those are those jumbo sized buzz-baits yeah? They sure look very interesting. When you are out jigging, often you will get the kings chase the lures very close to the boat.... when this happens, just put the jig rod down for a minute, pull out the popper rod (or stickbaits) and start working it.... the fish will be all fired up and close to the surface. even better if you have someone still working a fish or jigging at the same time.

thanks guys, some good advice right there, yeah Kezz with the marlin lures, we used to do it alot out of tutukaka and we scored some nice fish but the lures had hooks in them, so yeah a tease up would be the go alright. well living up here I have plenty of scope to look at so a trip with the good captain will be the go

This has given me an idea Mark...
Our Kings here in Cape Town are generally a topwater fishery, with jigs being a loooooong way behind... while our kings are nowhere near your sizes, in fact a 10 kilo fish here in the Cape is a trophy, we do get large numbers in the 4 to 6 kilo class, with a few fish pushing 8 or 9 kilos in the mix... while obviously smaller fish, matched to the right gear ( PE 2 and SB gear ) they are a blast, especially as its mostly a sight fishery.... 99% of our fish are caught on smallish plain silver spoons wound fast and straight... the faster the better... but as is typical of our kingies, you'll get 20 casts in with anything from 1 to 10 fish chasing your lure to the boat without hitting, before you get a fish to eat.... we boated 40 odd fish on Saturday past, where if we had hooked even half the fish that chased our spoons, we would have been looking at 150 plus fish... frustrating to say the least!
I have tried all number of fancy japanese lures, stickbaits, floating and sinking, SB's, weighted and unweighted.... no joy... unless its being wound stright and fast, the Kings aren't interested....
For ages I've been looking for a "secret weapon" to get these frustrating fish to commit more often rather than only 1 in 30.... these fish don't know a premium bait when they see one!!!
Our fish being alot smaller probably won't react kindly to a big prop bait like the PD version, and as our fish are mainly feeding on small anchovies, I reckon I might have to sneak myself into the bass fishing section at a local tackle store and pick up a few dying flutters, and upgrade the hardware and see how it goes...
Those of you not familiar with the "Dyling Flutter" its a classic bass fishing topwater, from Heddon ( same company that gave us the Zara Spook ) which has props both front and back, and comes as a version with just the rear blade.... might just be the right way to go....
http://www.landbigfish.com/showcase.cfm?PID=165 - http://www.landbigfish.com/showcase.cfm?PID=165
Might also be worth looking at the Peacock Bass lure classic, the Wood Chopper and Amazon Ripper... These baits are built to withstand Peacock Bass abuse, so "Should" be pretty tough with upgraded hooks etc...

Not sure if they will survive the class Kings you guys are blessed with, but they should handle our little guys no problem!
Cheers
Dre

In the summer in the BOI I usally just boost around and chuck lures at everything I can, bouys piles, rocks reefs, points, bait schools, work ups etc. Take note of the tides you raise fish at certain spots on.For many of the spots I frequent getting the tide right is everything. some spots I only make a couple of casts and if i don't raise anything move on, but for the deeper reefs/ baits schools I may cast for an hour or so in the same area trying to raise something.
In the winter we often find surface feeding schools out deep (60-100M) but they are a lot more hit and miss getting on to them on top.
Re teaser idea, last summer we popped a bunch that raised to a spearfishing bouy being towed behind the boat while setting up to drop a mate in on a snapper posie.

Was wondering how those Atomic Piles would go on our kings. Are Decoro the agents for Patriots? Some nice looking lures for sure and those Patrol magnum stickbaits look serious as. http://www.patriot-design.com/english/index.htm - http://www.patriot-design.com/english/index.htm
