I'm new to this forum and new to fishing for kingfish. I've been fishing for just snappers previously and I decided it's time for me to give kingies a go. Few questions - what gear is recommended and where is some good spots where I can fish for kingfish on land (I have no boat)? I'm based in Auckland and wouldn't mind driving few hours for good fishing... Any help would be greatly appreciated!!

Kinda sums it up really. 24kg mono setup is way to go on a rod about 7ft. Simple terminal tackle setups using 2-3m of 100-120lb trace to suspend you livebait under a balloon should get you there doing it. Just tie the best knots you can and make sure they are strong. If not happy, cut it off and start again.

In terms of areas, you dont have to go far from auckland or leave auckland at all at this time of year. Anywhere with a prominent point or headland, reasonable depth and current and clean water is worth a shot, especially if the area holds baitfish.

Gee, that gear question could open up a huge can of worms when all these opinonated LBGers put their 2 bits worth in thats for sure. I reckon you run with HiTechs advice tho, sounds like what i was told, and it worked for me first trip out. Go hard bro

Recently? I don't bother rock fishing round Whangas anymore, the far North is the one and only for me. Only problem with busby is that *****s in boats cut in real close right around the point.

Havnt had problems with yakkers before... but heaps with boats getting close to that invisible line that puts them in your fishing area, usually nothing is said but a few fingers raised and much talk amoungst the guys of what SHOULD happen if they venture any closer.

The most annoying ones for me are the jetski's - mindless buzzing around and comming/going in so close to areas that are very obviously being fished. Sadly there is nothing one can do but swear at them and give them all the usual hand and facial expressions to piss off.

Having done alot of both boat/landbased fishing, i have a true respect for peoples fishing areas... but alot of people dont sadly. Even worse here in Australia - had 150+ lining a beach trying to catch small Tailor.. wasnt more than a few metres between people and lots of line tangles. We had to wait a good 4 hours before enough room was cleared to get shark baits in the water.

haha friken computer....was meant to reply to the above, what kenshin said...what i find the best thing to do when a boat or yakker does this is to decide its time to ledger rig. normally there is a big current around the time these ****ers show up so a good 4 to 5 ounce sinker is required. aim for the vessel and cast hard, if they get hit tough **** they are fishing in your cast zone. my opinion anyway!

if going up to busby.. a better bet would be walk down the other side to smugglers cove take a right towards bream head half tide or lower will get you out to flat rock..
