Hello
I'm new to this forum and new to fishing for kingfish. I've been fishing for just snappers previously and I decided it's time for me to give kingies a go. Few questions - what gear is recommended and where is some good spots where I can fish for kingfish on land (I have no boat)? I'm based in Auckland and wouldn't mind driving few hours for good fishing... Any help would be greatly appreciated!!

Hey mate, Start off with 24 kg gear. best line to start with for live baiting off the rocks. Even though ive lost fish on 37kg , 24kg is a lot easier to hang on to untill you get used to hanging on to good amount of drag off the rocks. A good starting reel is a tld25,but if you you want the biz i would reccomend a Daiwa SLD30 single speed. they are stronger framed and more drag pressure. They take the beats better to!!
As of where to fish ,you wana hit Coro. Some where like Port Jacson which is quite an easy walk through the saddle. Some good fish up there at the mo to (Ask JK) hes been getting them up 18kg latly....I personly like to fish the east coast , opito bay , Matapaua bay. But these places can be a lot more succesful if you have a kayak to get to remote areas.
Just kayaking up from Matupaua bay about 15mins there are some mean ledges which are east to get on and some good current . Havent landed anything bigger than 25kg off here but have hooked a few.. hope this helps. PM if you got any Qs. Cheers

Good post Matt

Kinda sums it up really. 24kg mono setup is way to go on a rod about 7ft. Simple terminal tackle setups using 2-3m of 100-120lb trace to suspend you livebait under a balloon should get you there doing it. Just tie the best knots you can and make sure they are strong. If not happy, cut it off and start again.

Also check out http://www.fishing.net.nz/index.cfm/pageid/301/ViewPage/Kingfish some good info on catching kings there to get you in the right frame of mind.

In terms of areas, you dont have to go far from auckland or leave auckland at all at this time of year. Anywhere with a prominent point or headland, reasonable depth and current and clean water is worth a shot, especially if the area holds baitfish.

Good luck
JK

Gee, that gear question could open up a huge can of worms when all these opinonated LBGers put their 2 bits worth in thats for sure. I reckon you run with HiTechs advice tho, sounds like what i was told, and it worked for me first trip out. Go hard bro

if you don't mind a bit of a drive i have been hearing good reports of big kings up around whangarei (busby point) you will need at least 24kg gear live bait a big kahawai under a balloon.
won't want there by yourself thow

Recently? I don't bother rock fishing round Whangas anymore, the far North is the one and only for me. Only problem with busby is that *****s in boats cut in real close right around the point.

Hey which brings in a question. Lets say.. u drive urself 3 - 4 hours to a LBG piece of heaven.. got ur bait and livies on the drink.. then suddenly freakin boats and yakkers anchor themselves 50m off the ledge.. and during prime bite time with ur burley on!!! what do u do? happend to me once.. tried waving at em then pointing at the balloon.. only to be ignored.. Faq!!Angry drive me to the point I have to find some rocks to throw at em. But the best got over me and did nothing but to leave the place.

Havnt had problems with yakkers before... but heaps with boats getting close to that invisible line that puts them in your fishing area, usually nothing is said but a few fingers raised and much talk amoungst the guys of what SHOULD happen if they venture any closer.

The most annoying ones for me are the jetski's - mindless buzzing around and comming/going in so close to areas that are very obviously being fished. Sadly there is nothing one can do but swear at them and give them all the usual hand and facial expressions to piss off.

Having done alot of both boat/landbased fishing, i have a true respect for peoples fishing areas... but alot of people dont sadly. Even worse here in Australia - had 150+ lining a beach trying to catch small Tailor.. wasnt more than a few metres between people and lots of line tangles. We had to wait a good 4 hours before enough room was cleared to get shark baits in the water.

haha friken computer....was meant to reply to the above, what kenshin said...what i find the best thing to do when a boat or yakker does this is to decide its time to ledger rig. normally there is a big current around the time these ****ers show up so a good 4 to 5 ounce sinker is required. aim for the vessel and cast hard, if they get hit tough **** they are fishing in your cast zone. my opinion anyway!
