It's always a question of what's best what's best price etc. I really think sometimes you just have to commit to what you intend to do and the cost is just that. It just the cost of doing what you want to do!
I guess this topic is a really good place to acknowledge that buying the best you can afford is the way to go when you have a passion.

The kingies will be around most of the buoys but I would look at targeting the ones away from the ferry lanes and look at the ones out around Rangi

Just my opinion but a finnor biscayne 80 + a ugly stick black tiger is to me a perfect CHEAP all rounder, do anything with it.

By the way was in rebels last week they had a Biscayne 80 plus fin nor surf rod on clearance for $130 so it might be worth a look

which rebels is that like to strike?

i have a spinfisher being lined up so ill likely stick with that, but i do like the look of the biscayne.

MIB, can you suggest which buoy number would likely hold more kings? i know i should try them all but ive heard some are better than others.

Buoys 2-4 rangi channel is as good a start as any.. they move around so its not like they hold on any particular buoy... Try the poles as well

thanks MIB, its been a while since throwing lures around the buoys. Is a livebait slow trolled/drifted passed them good as well?

what is it about FADS that attracts fish, is it the smaller baitfish enjoying some shelter, which in turn attracts the pelagics? not that id really call these fads lol

Kings do move around a lot.
 
I target them most weeks and get one or two, nothing large lately and not in your area.
 
I went to my top area last week at which I have a dozen marks that mostly produce and all were empty!
 
On the way home after a swim and lunch we hit another mark a few ks away and as soon as we got over it I knew we would be busy.
 
My wife jigged her first kingfish after watching me for a couple of years and she's got the bug.
 
You will get better and better at reading kings on your sounder (assume you have one)  and getting over them which does take some time to figure out.
 
In 10knots and 80meters it can be tricky to hit a smallish pin.
 
Before I started to target them I could tell snapper on sand and that was it...now I can tell kingfish pretty well and save a lot of energy/time jigging the wrong spots.
 
I started with a big fin nor offshore spin and it was bulletproof but I hated the slop not having infinity anti reverse, I am sure you can get an inexpensive reel with infinity anti reverse?
Once you are addicted watch out, I have some pretty pricey gear now and it is very nice with a good fish on the pointy bit.
 
I probably have a long way to go but what I wanted to say is give it some time and pay attention and you will become good at targeting kings with jigs.
I got some fish to keep me going at the start but nothing like the competence I have now.
