As per the title, is it possible to jig with out a flash super light speed reel for kings? Id prefer a spinning reel.

Get a old second hand Penn spin reel, the old made in USA 850ss ect.

Yeah Makka is right, if you are on a serious budget look for something solid  but second hand. You can use almost anything for jigging, but depending on quality it may only last one or 2 trips. Your best bet is to work out your max budget then buy the best you can within your budget.

$219 for a brand new v series 9500, 20 kgs drag

The old penn 9500 and 8500 are good reels but not a patch on tne new ones, why buy a reel to last a few trips when one of these will last years

The older model "made in America' Penn spinfisher IV will be more than adequate, and likely cost no more than $100 odd dollars for a second hand one of trade me. They where one of the original reels used by japaneese jig fishermen well before anythjing " specialised" was on the market. Granted they went on to modify them, but in original condition, they will be fine. Be mindful that as they dont have a anti reverse bearing and as the reverse pawl cog dosent have a lot of teeth, you will have a bit of back play if mechanical jigging. For speed jigging  :) .

Purely for speed jigging, Im not much of a lure worker.

Is that the 950ss? Could I get away with an 850?

second that.. The old Penn reels were built very tough... Some of the newer Penn's feature sealed side plates at very reasonable prices... And someone just reminded me about the Finnor reels as well..

I have had mates use a biscane, worked well for a while but after a few solid kings it eventually met its demise. Fin nor offshore is a good option. Although they are heavy the are built for power and with stainless parts will last a long time. I know H&F has/had a sale on them on a surfcaster for $199. If you could then on sell the rod for $50 it would be a cheap reel. Another option would be to buy a OEM reel such as an ajiking wahoo which from memory is based on the old stellas. Around the $150 price range but will do the trick.

I think it's an extremely long bow to draw a comparison between the AJKing and any Shimano Stella, based on or looks like.... Maybe a guy who worked in the shimano factory had a half brother, whose ex wife's cousin changed a light bulb at the AJKing factory once, but that's probably the only link :)

Get an older penn, cheap and built to last. That's why after 20 years they are still being used!

What I should have meant to say was it was a reel to match the stella at a fraction of the price. With it being a fraction of the price you would expect there to be corners cut everywhere. Giving u a fraction of the same quality. But thats what happens when things are built to a price point.

Fin nor biscayne 80 is what you want! 100 bucks off marine deals i had one and punished heaps of kings up to 20kg, they go hard heaps of (surprisingly smooth) drag, a wee bit heavy but for 100 bucks you can't complain

It's always a question of what's best what's best price etc. I really think sometimes you just have to commit to what you intend to do and the cost is just that. It just the cost of doing what you want to do!
I guess this topic is a really good place to acknowledge that buying the best you can afford is the way to go when you have a passion.
Cheers Pete

The kingies will be around most of the buoys but I would look at targeting the ones away from the ferry lanes and look at the ones out around Rangi

Just my opinion but a finnor biscayne 80 + a ugly stick black tiger is to me a perfect CHEAP all rounder, do anything with it.

By the way was in rebels last week they had a Biscayne 80 plus fin nor surf rod on clearance for $130 so it might be worth a look

which rebels is that like to strike?

i have a spinfisher being lined up so ill likely stick with that, but i do like the look of the biscayne.

MIB, can you suggest which buoy number would likely hold more kings? i know i should try them all but ive heard some are better than others.

Whangarei branch but being a chain store id imagine they all would be clearing them out the door.

Buoys 2-4 rangi channel is as good a start as any.. they move around so its not like they hold on any particular buoy... Try the poles as well

thanks MIB, its been a while since throwing lures around the buoys. Is a livebait slow trolled/drifted passed them good as well?

what is it about FADS that attracts fish, is it the smaller baitfish enjoying some shelter, which in turn attracts the pelagics? not that id really call these fads lol

Kings do move around a lot.

I target them most weeks and get one or two, nothing large lately and not in your area.

I went to my top area last week at which I have a dozen marks that mostly produce and all were empty!

On the way home after a swim and lunch we hit another mark a few ks away and as soon as we got over it I knew we would be busy.

My wife jigged her first kingfish after watching me for a couple of years and she's got the bug.

You will get better and better at reading kings on your sounder (assume you have one)  and getting over them which does take some time to figure out.

In 10knots and 80meters it can be tricky to hit a smallish pin.

Before I started to target them I could tell snapper on sand and that was it...now I can tell kingfish pretty well and save a lot of energy/time jigging the wrong spots.

I started with a big fin nor offshore spin and it was bulletproof but I hated the slop not having infinity anti reverse, I am sure you can get an inexpensive reel with infinity anti reverse?
Once you are addicted watch out, I have some pretty pricey gear now and it is very nice with a good fish on the pointy bit.

I probably have a long way to go but what I wanted to say is give it some time and pay attention and you will become good at targeting kings with jigs.
I got some fish to keep me going at the start but nothing like the competence I have now.

Enjoy..
