I know this comes up all the time but thought I would start a new tread anyways. After some 80lb braid to spool up in time for topwater. Need about 250-300m, don't wanna break the bank but maybe around the $25 per 100m range. Anyone got something good lying round or know of anything worth a go.

Mate for $10 more you can buy 300 yard JB Hollow casting braid 60, 80 0r 100lb. Someone one here sells them. I check and let you know. I use 60 and it cast like a dream.

Good advice,with the JB I am sure that the 100lb is actually thinner than the 80lb so bare that in mind if you go heavier than 60lb.

I bought from "reeldeal"from here. Not sure if he have anymore. The 60lb breaks at 90lb and i have caught plenty big GT's with it and no issues. Nothing wrong if you want to go 100lb though.

last weekend's fish was on the 60lb Jb Jono, mint as, smooth as babies bits.  for the extra there is a more that $10 bucks in it's performance

This place sells JB hollow, think it might be run by someone on here
 
 
I got mine through swordfish steve, I went for 100lb over 80 as the 100lb is thinner.

Can you splice the leader inside the JB hollow casting braid? Like you do with gamefishing etc? Might make it slip thru the guides nicely. . .

Yes you can Telecaster but it must be served properly so mono doesnt come out of hollowWink

i use JB hollow for all my windon leaders as well. Great stuff hollow braid

Do you rough the leader up with sandpaper or cut some knicks into it like barbs or something?Could you use an adhesive maybe?

I bought a spool of 80 lb, still to,put it on, i think the trace should be rounded at the tip with fine grade wet & dry, so it goes into the braid smoothly. I think you only need bind (serve) the end of the braid to prevent it fraying and allow it to slip smoothly though the guides. Try threading a length of a metre or so, no serve, and see how strongly it binds under pressure.

You can do that BUT any insertion of mono/flurocarbon into hollow braid MUST be served otherwise the mono can pull out.

I have been thinking of doing a "how to" on building windons and casting topshots so will get onto to it asap.
There is some great vids on youtube, a quick search should find plenty of answers although some are not that great.( the igfa one i have seen on building windons is Thumbs Down)

Suggest you guts obtain a Power Pro Hollow Ace splicing kit from either Melton's or Tackle Direct. About $80 US. Comes with everything you need to splice top shots and instructional DVD.
 
I've been splicing my top water leaders now for a while. Cast like a dream. Practically indestructible. Whipping the end does nothing to hold it together, it simply stops the braid from unravelling at the end.
 
Using JB 100lb hollow with 100lb Suffix leader. I only insert the leader about 25cm into the braid and it will not pull out, even without whipping. Have tested it to destruction several times.
 
Only problem with JB is that it gets harder to work with after it has been used a while. It is very hard to open up to let the splicing needle inside, hence why I'm only getting about 25cm in.
 
Some other brands are much easier to work with. I have played with Power Pro Hollow Ace and TufLine Guides Choice. Both of these are much easier to splice with.
