So i'm thinking about using more SST data this gamefishing season.

I've purchased a couple from OceanSST in the past (which were awesome), i see NIWA has subscriptions available for $50 a month and there's also some for free on swellmap.

What sites/subscriptions are people using and how have you found them??
I love catching fish. But fishing isn't always about catching.

I use Ocean SST maps for Tournaments, Paul puts out an excellent map, on a day to day basis, last year I signed up to www.seasurface.co.nz alot more imfo than NIWA, they have contour lines, current lines, personlised maps and alot more, costs about $ 300 for the whole year, you can go on the site and get 7 day maps free have a look.

We prodominantly fish the west coast from raglan port where southwesterlies and strong currents can alter temperatures by 2 degrees plus or minus on a daily basis. We ran the niwa package last season and apart from the days where cloud cover restricted the image, and I believe you would have this issue with any of the services, we found it very effective, I feel the swellmap range is just a bit to broard. One thing I would like to see Niwa do is change their lat and long lines to degrees and minutes rather than breaking the degree down into hundredths of a degree( almost have to carry a calculator to convert the marks to plot it onto the chart plotter). the package cost us 150 for 3 months(minimum deal) and then tacked another month onto it at the end for $50 if I recall correctly.

One thing about niwa that pissed me off last year was their dodgy coverage late december through mid january....maybe they were all on holiday but sometimes they didnt update for around a week.....that annoyed the crap out of me and I was only a pay per view customer......it was particularly frustrating last year as thats when we had a great bite in early jan.....if I was a subscriber and they did that I would be asking for a refund over those periods....pretty sure it wasnt a cloud cover issue as some of those days were cloudless

I have gone down the road of automated sst maps, and it is just a pain in the arse, With live data it can vary so much and giving data that is not correct, due to cloud interference, and this can look like temp breaks as well. You really do need chlory data in conjuction with sst data, as this is not effected by thermal.

If you go with Niwa it pays to get the Com subscription if you want to find where the main body of warm water is and what is coming of it. If you are just looking for local temp breaks, then the $50 option is ok.
Seasurface.co.nz, is pretty damn good as it gives you both chlor and sst.

oceansst.com is really just an on call fish finding option, just start your engines and go for it.

There all good, just depends how into it you are as to what you get out of it.

i will also add that the data will not update untill about 12pm-1pm on mon -fri and when i go out on any given morning i find myself going off yesterdays and if i go out monday morning i have to use fridays. is there a better option ?

If you need live updates, thats easy if it is not cloud covered. but if you follow the ssts over the week, then you should be able to predict were the break that you have been watching is moving to.

have to agree bro, been looking at the swell map ones, as a rough indication and a gps position and contour lines for the temp breaks it is not a bad one

Just rebooting an old post , thought I would have a search before starting a topic already covered Cool
Has there been any new providers of SST charts and relative info.
I am presently using a 15 day free trial of Fishtrack.com and would like to compare other options before signing up. Seems pretty good to me with sea temps , batho charts , chlorophyl? and current directions. Alot of the additional information such as fishing reports are more global but that's not the main purpose.
Pricing seems very reasonable at $79 per year for premium , however I will check that as seems a bit cheap compared to some charges previously mentioned.
Thanks

I subscribed to fish track ,turned out to be $79 US which came up on my credit card as $120 NZ.I can't see any difference from the free bit. There is a pay monthly option which I thought I applied for but that didn't happen. Not sure it was worth it now.

It is the best Dave. I have used Fishtrack in the past but it is so basic. Ocean sst are so much better

Thanks for the support.

It is to be used in development of the service.
