Greetings people!
Just wondering if I can pick a few people's brains as to Sulivan's Bay (Mahurangi National Park)
This spot has been producing okay results with a few good Kawhai straight out off the beach but I was wondering if the Island to the right hand side would be worth a go. I'm sure that there are a few other goods spots around here.
Anyone want to share? (would be grateful for any info)
If anyone wants to go here I would definately recommend Pillies as the best bait to go with. Fish won't even touch squid.
Cheers
Pudding Island it's called. You can get access at low water and fish the incoming for a few hours and if you are prepared to wait for the tide you can even sit it out on the island for the duration. It drops off on its northern side and we have picked up the odd kingi around this point (boat fishing) in the summer months. Snapper, JDs, Trevs, Kahawai and sharks mostly bronzies visit the harbour during the year along with some big rays. Over the other side of the harbour is another point on an island with a shallow causeway for access at low water (Casnell Island ?) and it can produce good fishing around Feb and March.
At the top of the hill before you enter the park there is an information board and a track leading down to the beach (Cudlip Point and Te Muri Bay). This beach and the point are also worth a fish especially in the evenings around Feb and March.
Have you tried the back of the Waiwera Island? Good kelp beds on the northern side.

Hi Diggler,
Fished on Pudding Island about 4 weeks ago. Spent 5 hours out there (2-7pm) and not a sausage. A couple of Asian guys 30m away caught about 2 undersized snapper during the same time period. You will get your feet wet up to your knees crossing at low tide, so you will be there for a while. You are right, my squid wasn't even looked at, so I changed to Bonito (which kept all the bait fish fed).
I wandered down to the other point (left as you look seaward) and it was the same story. I have heard it can be productive around this area, but maybe during the warmer months?
Rocky
Cheers for the info.
Will perhaps leave this one for the warmer months, & thanks for the tip Damian as I haven't tried that spot yet.

Hey deepsea,
Mate you got me. No I didn't. But before the asian guys came along and starting fishing that nice eastern ledge, there was another guy in that same spot and he berleyed up to no avail.
You are right though, that eastern side looks like it has potential. I can definitely see this spot being the place where fish pass on the way into the harbour. Maybe I wasn't getting the goods into the right spot? That's fishing for ya I guess.
I think it's time to call the helicopter. No messing around.

hi guys spent two years up at mahurangi marine tech in 2000 2001 and fishedcasnell and waiwera heaps. fishin waiwera the fingers to right of the beach are good and the the island right on the end casting back to orewa got some bloody good fish up to 7lb which are abloody handfull in the shallows. casnells a good spot for getting little pannies, walk right round to the furthest point only when low tide coincides with evening or you will just be castin in tio sh*t ground. hand fulls of mussel berley biffed out is the trick on the shallow parts of the coast.
Is it just me or is everyone giving this spot a try at the moment?
Was out there in the weekend and there were lots of people fishing from both sides. (although I was the only one silly enough to get my feet wet crossing out to the Island)
If your after live bait fish straight off the bay/beach area as there are plenty of nice live bait sized kawhai there.
Still haven't found the right spot to fish on that Pudding Island though......oh well...will keep on trying.
