Greetings all, Just wondering if any of you have been having issues with very poor quality mullet bait. I live in Auckland and buy my bait from a major fishing store that has high turnover of bait .

3 of the bags I have bought have turned to mush as soon as it defrosted with the skin peeling off like bad sunburn. Had to mummify it with cotton to get it to stay on the hook in order to be able to use it at all.

Told the shop and not a lot of interest shown.

I realise they can only sell what they are given and have no idea of the condition of the fish they are being given but at the end of day the stuff under the fair trading act has to be fit for purpose and it isn't.

It would appear the commercial guys are not looking after the fish as they should prior to selling it or the problem may lie with the people packaging the stuff for shipping to the shops.

This is a bit of a waste of good fish to my way of thinking.

The salted mullet is ok and I would buy that in preference to the frozen stuff but they often run out of it surprise surprise.

Just wondered if you guys were finding the same issue in other parts of the country or is it just Auckland. Never had these issues in the past so what's changed I wonder.

While I'm having a gripe Wasabi number 4 hooks have an issue at the moment with the tips breaking off the hooks. Lost 3 good fish to that . They do however save you losing your sinker when they snag on a rock. Just pull gently on the line until the tip breaks off and you get your sinker back.

If you have a close look the barb looks to be cut in a lot deeper than they used to be which is weakening the hook tip. Used these hooks for years and caught binloads of fish with them so bit of a shame

Told the shop about those as well and again not a lot of interest shown, They still have them well stocked on the shelf so it looks like so long as they can make money out of it , that's the only criteria that matters.

They did put me onto the best surfcasting rod I have ever owned which was the okuma Mad Dog 15 ft surfcaster. It beats my veritas 14 ft rod by probably 20m  Got a shimano big bait runner on it with 40 lb braid. Is a great combination.

Changed to black magic KL 4/0 curved point hooks. Brilliant. Strong and the curved hook point doesn't snag on the rocks so I'm not losing half a dozen hooks a day surfcasting on the edges of the Manukau harbour which is rock snag central. And catching about the same amount of fish.

Manukau is still rock fishing ok. Got 2 nice pan size snapper yesterday and lost a good one today before my bait all fell to bits and killed the days fishing.  So Not all BAD !!!

Be interesting to see if others are having the same issues.

Happy fishing guys.

I catch my own to when I can but the commercial guys have set real long nets out there and wiped them out from the area where I set my net. Paying about $18.00 for two mullet from the shop I go to which is a good price compared to about $25.00 from a gas station.

Had my net set for 3 days and got nothing.

I know what you mean about the poor quality of frozen mullet bait. I got sick of it and now just buy fresh the day before from Pack n Save or Scott's seafood. Being food grade so always in great condition. Same price if not cheaper when on special and stops supporting those not taking care of the resource.

At my local flea market, 2 whole mullet cost $10, Its not the freshest and best eaten immediately.
Its better than the stuff at the tackle shop.
