what are you guys preferring to do when it comes to the bigger gear, stand up or chair.

I run all chair 80s but this year I will be running mostly stand up gear, well to tell the truth I will be running all spinning gear so it will all be stand up with them, comps will be different as I will run the 80's but not 100% sure whether I will run them stand up or not.

So what are most of you doing I would be interested to know.Big smile

One thing I have found it the black magic equalizer is useless when it comes to the small rods so have got one of those small gimbals and have set it up so it sits over my left leg and gives good balance, it has been trial and error here but feel I have sorted it out

Given that in NZ 90% of our marlin are Stripeys and where there is one theres generally more, so multiple hookups are fairly common. In my opinion its not a bad idea to have rods that you can handle easily standup even if you decide the chair is your favoured option. After catching a couple on chair 80 bents standup before on doubles I was glad so see them off our boat, dispite being in pretty good shape at the time they nearly killed me. Faster tapper straight 80 chair rods are very comfortable standup in comparison and still give you the chair option and could allow mixed line weight spreads aswell if desired.
Depends what you are doing tho I guess, if tease n switching you could have one of each setup and use what you want depending on fish size or angler.

For me, I think I will be getting fewer days on the water(or atleast out wide) so the plan is to fish just 10s and 15kgs to get the most out of each fish we come across.

Stand up for the us as normal. Caught my first from a chair earlier this year and found the experience rather dull compared to 37 stand up. However I'm off to Cairns late November to play with the big girls. The skipper has been advised of our preference for 80 stand up and given the amount of backing down on fish they do to beat the sharks I don't think it will really matter what weight we are on within reason. He is in agreement  and hopefully we will get to tease and switch a big one.Certainly 130lb chair fishing does not hold much appeal.

130lb standup ! ! !  Good luck and I hope you are built like a Georgian front rower as I cant imagine how my body would stand up to it based on the 1.5hrs in the chair on a grander a couple of years back on the UL which we ended up loosing.

Yes you will get the big girls to the boat quite quickly in most cases even with the 80lb gear and backing down hard was the way to go.......BUT.... there are also the ones that if you miss the early shots then you will be in for the long haul ! 130lb stand up .... crikey ! a different beast all together !

Im leaning towards going back to stand up this year when Im on the boat as my 1st experience with standup with a big chair Rod was not good. The skipper will still run the bent butt chair rods.

The only other option was to look at the 1/2 or 3/4 butts which would give you a slighly better cross over when required . Im yet to track them down though !

Unless I am mistaken I can not see where in my post I refer to fishing 130lb stand up.
37kg with around 20 kgs over the tip seems to be about the maximum most can handle hence 130lb is out of the question

Roger that Wind Up Big smile . Hope you get those big girls in and released quickly enough on the 80"s  then before those big Tiger Sharks turn up. Good luck over there. Totally awesome experience to be had. Who are you fishing with over there ?

My trip with Batfasterd and Dohboy last season taught me heaps.  I always though that **** would be easy given all the standing up I do on beachs/bricks.

But holy **** I was ****ed after a few mins with a tiny little mako on the other end.  Wasn't rough, but wasn't flat out west either.

Much much harder off a boat then I thought.

Stand up is my preferred option Zambizi as I find you can really put the hurt on fish and not yourself. You must have faith in all your gear and be prepared to lay back and sit on the fish via your harness. If you don't it is a painful waste of effort. Also always have a crew member behind you at all times in case of a bust off - sure can hurt hitting your head etc .

Call me silly, but I quite like my chair. You get to concentrate on the gear and the fish without having to worry about getting tossed around the boat on all but the calm days. For extra challenge if you find chair fishing a bit easy, just start moving down line weights. Quite happy to go stand-up also, but when it is rough I get tired of getting jerked around by the boat. I figure most anglers (other than the super experienced) will get a fish to the boat a little quicker in a chair, so that helps with successful releases as well.

thanks, I will be running spinning rods and reels and the big gear can wait till the comps are being fished, it will bring a bit of fun back into my fishing, as for 130lb stand up, well its done all the time down off greymouth and the results speak volumes.

hi BA,

i am interested to hear more about your ideas regarding the spin gear. do you plan on trolling lures with them as per usual or do you have something else in mind? i assume you plan to use braid on them for the line capacity & drag loads. is this correct? i have done quite a bit of game trolling with my spin gear and really enjoy it, but i have not got a marlin on it. i have had a few cut offs of other lines on the braid when hooked up to wahoo/tuna etc. you can really pump them to the boat fast though compared to normal game gear.

how many lines at once?

lots of questions and you may not be keen to reveal all your ideas, but i am interested to see what you are thinking. Big smile cheers

Stand up all the way. Bugger putting a chair in a 16 foot stabi anyway -so very biased.
However, have fished 130 and 37 from a chair -was horrible!  May be ok for older, disabled people, ...or perhaps on very big fish with unfit angler.  And I aint no fitness finatic.
Love stand up on 24, and can be done quite easy on 37 with right rod and good gimble set up.
Calm water always helps as I don't like fishing in rough anyway. Can do standup solo and driven boat as well easily on 24kg... set up, preparation and staying calm helps.
Would be same for spin gear I suppose Steve, may be bit less capacity... so just keep got keep it slick.  And a chair aint going to give you any more time than stand up -done right.

well the last of the gears have arrived and set up to play silly buggers, the boat is now decked out with spin gear and Jig rods, was the best way to get a spin rod with a lot of grunt, done a heap of stand up fishing over the years but this will add a bit of excitement to the game for me, cant wait to get it on.
What has or is a bonus is the ability to be able to cast baits to sighted fish again another bit of excitement. roll on the good water bait and birds
