Hey Guys,
Getting my uncle to take me and my old man out for a fish out at the Rurimas behind whale island. But my uncle isnt too big into bottom fishing, and is more a summer game fishing man, so Ive been trying to find information about some spots/hintes/techniques for off the islands.
We will be there probably in August, so would be good to know what it fishes like in winter? Is it easy to pick up livies there to have a shot at some kings?
Any info would be much appreciated.

all hail westie!. you are off to a good start, at least you know how to spell its name correctly, good one mate. now all you have to do is educate 90% of the fisho's who insist its spelt raurima....ie "the raus".
have a good look at a chart before you venture into here as there are a few nastys just below the surface.
best to get "livies" just out through the whakatane heads.
the rurima area holds fish all year, snapper, kingies, tarakihi, trevelly and maomao.
go into shallow water and berley up heaps for best results.
tasman reef is towards the west as well and there are smaller reefs inside, towards the shore. ask the locals, the iceman etc they will help. good luck.
she was only a fishermans daughter, but she reeled at the sight of my rod!.

Thanks  Roddholder. To be honest I actually searched for the Raurimas as Ive always heard it called the Raus, but was surprised to see it was Rurima. Anyways, thanks for the info. Basically thought the same ideas e.g. get the livies just over the bar, then head out there for a few kinds. Havent done much fishing there, but think my uncle might be keen to take us there for an afternoon if i was down that way as White would be a bit far.
Cheers
