Parked up in caravan at inlaws for another week , now all the family Xmas duties out the way was hoping to get a bend in the fly rod.
Went for a drive to the 2nd bridge past totata reserve yesterday , Pohongina river. The lower part of river very discoloured , however cleared at the former spot upstream. Did not fish , more a family trip. The spot x book says a good days fishing upstream from the bridge, as we have hadore rain last night probably more colour.
As my spot x book about 5 year old might be out of date . Did not see any fish.

Also had a look at the confluence where the pohongina enters manawatu , water colour of the pohongina very coloured whereas the manawatu relatively clear.

Another option that looks viable in book is upper manawatu between woodville and danevirk . Prefer smaller stream stuff but guess can't be to picky .

Any advise appreciated, will be fishing on my own which I don't mind but if anybody keen to join us for bit of a look no worries?

fish the upper reaches of the Pohangina river- drive to Ashurst,  and head towards the Totara reserve, alot of rainbows with a few browns here and there, I fish dry fly only on this river- you can also head over to Makuri,Mangahao, Mangatainoka, Makakahi - Pahiatua area- some of the best rivers in NZ- big browns at the golf course but they are very shy....

Thanks Scuzzymoto,
Will try the upper reaches of pohongina above the 2nd bridge.
What golf course are you referring to for the browns .
Have not caught a fish on a dry fly yet so that being top of the list for me.

Make a nice change from casting double nymph rigs
Heading over to Woodville tomorrow to visit friends on a farm so may plop caravan there for a day or two.
Cheers

Golf course- Mangatainoka River near the Tui beer factory, some very big fish in there

If your talking about the bridge heading over the saddle - just watch the farmer as 200 meters up stream is private land- not an issue but be aware of it... I would fish up near the Totara reserve area  - the side streams hold good fish, sight fishing best with dry fly(small hair/copper underneath).

Roger that ,
Not referring to saddle bridge ,
I mean the 2nd bridge that crosses the Pohangina a few km past the totata reserve.apparently a good days fishing upstream from there . From the bridge it looks fishy , river less braided and more defined . Slight tea colour to water but definitely possible to spot fish .
Yes I did take note of sections of private ownership but did not appear to affect the section mentioned , please correct me if I got this wrong , don't want to upset the locals.

Nothing wrong just under the Fitzherbert bridge in Palmy, just walk upwards from along Dittmer drive, sight fishing with both nymphs and dries, but also spinners too if discoloured. Fish the willows on either side where big browns cruise there. End of Albert st is also a great spot, along the wider parts sight fishing again.

Pohangina is great near Totara res as scuzzymoto said, both browns and bows. Over Dannevirke way is also a great option. Fantastic fishing near Palmy, definitely a good river. Good luck and enjoy! What days are you going to be there?

Ah ok, I get home on the 6th. That's a shame as we could have organised a inner Palmy fishing day in the most polluted river in the western world

Ha ha , sounds like something not to be missed , maybe you could organise it next Xmas, might want to work on your marketing slogan a little.
I will have a shot at the local spots you mentioned though .
All the best for the new year
