Boi today 5m viZ
Morning and afternoon dives. Morning I saw more fish but swimming into the sun was a cock up. Evening dive had sun on my back. Lost a nice one from a tail shot and drilled a pannie about 20m along. Nice to dive a new area

Nice fish northland bill. That's one of the most reliable pieces of coast right there. I have dived it a lot.

Been up at Whatuwhiwhi since Monday. Poor vis and swell on the eastern side. Matai and front building swell and swell off the islands on the western side. Cold water.

Headed for a week’s RnR in the Far North with some mates.  Based out of Whatuwhiwhi then headed down to Toots.  The daily ritual of checking forecasts prior to departure looked positive – that was until a day out when it turned to 30knot NE winds and NE swells for the week, with rain, rain, followed by more rain… oh joy

Chances were I was gonna get wet, so why not on the kayak?  First mission was a 7k paddle north of Brodies.  Lovely area, the building swells a bit off putting.  Parked up the yak above the water line on the beach and snooped north, stuffing up a nice snapper on the first outcrop 10m from shore.  Ever had the feeling some snapper follow you?  The cheeky blighter turned up 100m ahead drifting tantalising out of range.   Headed south, kayak in tow, to Brodies.  The weed lines were silted up and opted to pull the pin and paddle home before it got really nasty.  No crays found over the days up north – probably hugging rocks in the deep to avoid the swell.  Fortunately packed heaps of bbq meat to avoid (most of) the scorn from Jappie mates back at the bach

Took an off day and drove up 90 mile beach in a mate’s Range Rover, as you do.  Stopped to chat to guys working tractors in the surf around Te Wakatehaua island collecting seaweed covered in mussel spat.  Apparently it is a multi-million dollar business, with the players all fighting to bring in the “weed” only found there and exported from Northland to mussel farms around the country.  Cool guys – real Country Calendar moment

Up to the dunes at the top of 90, Cape Reinga lighthouse jealously eyeing up Motuopao island, then stopped for a beer at the Houhoura pub.  Have a look see here if you haven’t (go during the day to avoid running into the public).  They have a range of snapper from 25 to 33 pounds on the wall, oh – and a 1m great white shark from a mother caught up in North Cape back in the day.  Black and white photos from “back in the day”, old school

Day three – Matai Bay.  NE swell sweeping in at both ends, opted to paddle to the Southern.  Kingfish tail spotted in the white water and had to settle for a kahawai from the healthy schools and a few butters for the family.  Only baby snapper spotted on butterfish guts.  Yucky day.   The swell closed out the remaining days on either side of the front of the coast.  Headed south to Toots for the weekend.  Managed a few shore/kayak dives.  Put the neck out ducking under the first big set.  Spotted about three panny snapper in the very shallows tucked out of the way of the surf.  Apart from schools of healthy kahawai on the points – dead as a door nail – crays quiet here also.  Can’t win em all

Good effort snoop.

Yea amazing about that mussel industry with the majority of spat coming from just one location.  If it stopped washing up for any particular reason the industry would go down hill big time.  At present in Nelson, the largest bivalve hatchery in the southern hemisphere is under construction to produce mussel spat for commercial farms around NZ.

Right next to Cawthron Mike.  It's being built and managed by SpatNZ who are in partnership with Sanford.

Terrapin, they can settle them, they have always been able to, it's just a numbers problem with high mortality which will be resolved by trial and error I would assume.

Just got back from a family trip up North at Whatuwhiwhi.  Coincidentally Jack0 just happened to also be at the same camp ground, what are the odds?   Not sure how the boat got attached to the car eitherWink
Managed to Sneak out into some lee Sat morning and we were pleasantly surprised with up to 10M Vis in places.  Very snappery in the spots with current, but the Easterly surge made it really tough going.  It was great to see numbers of Snapper about, also great that snappa slappa is safely back home to daddy.  Cough it up Jack0!

Camp Scales had Chris's at 5.6 but I agree that might have been a little light.  Still he does have a tendency to get the long skinny ones.  As per last time, it was the girth that brought tears to the eyes for Chris Shocked

On the upside, found a mean cray hole, or maybe more a cray complex, it had a swim through and multiple arms.

Had a nice dive out at the waiwiri rock last weekend. Acres of birds, heaps of trevs and kahawai. Managed an alright kingi in the average vis.

Me and two others shot up to the Bay Of Islands on Wed. Had a decent dive Thursday, shot a few Pannie snapps and did the scollop mission on the inside of the islands, really patchy, place has been smashed and picked over. 4m vis, covered a crap load of ground for not a lot.

Did a big day Friday, dived Cape Brett, got a decent snapp on first dive few other bigger models around but never came in for a look like some curious local seals did. Dived The Dog, and Percy, nice size crays around, got 2 hearty ones. The place was looking quite fishy, littered with trevs and Red mokes, but nothing worth releasing the shaft on.
Dived a few spots on the way down to Waiwiri after that, managed 4 hearty crays and one 7.5lb packie as well as a few paua to top the bin off. Viz was 18-20 meters. No kings seen, bugger all birds round, nor sign of any kind of work ups, all round worth a mission out this weekend if you're pondering on going though. Weather was mint Friday, no surge on exposed really, nor much wind about, which made for a satisfying mission. Water was 14deg, middle of both days, bloody mind blowing how cold it was up those ways to tell you the truth.

Anyone else manage to get out?

went out cape brett yesterday, was a couple snaps around down past waiwiri, shot the biggest one i saw went 17lb, viz got up to 35feet. jumped in at the hole in the rock plenty of fish around, saw 1 nice kingi that didnt wanna come too close, shot 4 pinkies and a nice trev viz was maybe 25feet. 3 of us managed our scollie limit but was very hard going took a long time and the hideous viz with the bottom layer of urine coloured water didnt make it any easier. anyone know what the bright yellow column of water is about 3m off the bottom?? never seen it b4 was the worst viz i've ever dived in

speared the coast around Bland Bay area on Saturday. Vis was very hazy/salpy 5-4m. Finaly cracked the20lb mark with this guy, charged into a gutter just as i popped my head over the ledge. lodged a piece of steel in the back of its head and it went to sleep.

Weighed in at 22lb or 10kg. Stoked! Big smile
Hall of fame worthy? thoughts?
