Hey guys, Im quite new to crossing bars and was thinking of heading out over the Manukau on Thursday. The weather is looking mint and I have tried to do as much research as possible on the internet. There is limited info out there on as to if I can cross on low slack tide? High tide is at 09:00 and I was thinking of heading out then. low tide is around 15:00 and this is when I was thinking of coming back in. Swell is 0.5-0.7m and wind is around 5 knots. Any info to help me make my decision on whether to attempt it would be greatly appreciated, even better would be to follow an expert out if anyone is headed out that day. 😀

Hi there. Yes it is best to cross that bar at slack water, high or low tide are fine. They are not big tides and the conditions look great for Thursday at the moment. My son is heading out on Friday on my boat but I have work so cant go. There is a bar crossing seminar this Wednesday in Waiuku:

Waiuku Cosmopolitan Club:  Wednesday, 20 March 2024 from 6.30pm - 9pm
4 Victoria Avenue, Waiuku

I strongly recommend you attend. Myself and many others with experience on the Manukau bar will be there. The guys running it know the bar very well. They will be able to answer all your questions

Thanks for the info man, I am definitely keen to go to one of those courses but unfortunately I won’t be able to make this Wednesday’s one as I will be at work. I’m also keen to join a game fishing club.

Hi Smudge, I know it might be a little late to register for course tonight as I can’t seem to do it on the link, is it possible to just show up and how much does it cost? Cheers mate.

Go to the course .. and be very careful going over that bar, or it could kill you…Almost  killed me twice a few years ago on way out and way in. I have an ILM ticket and 5 m stabi for last 20 years, it is too small for there but been over that bar multiple times. It’s only place that scares **** out of me. But fishing is fantastic out beyond that bar.

Popped the cherry today and made it over the bar, sounds like a pretty cool community on the west, had me cracking up to some of the conversations that where had out wide £, thanks Smudge for suggesting the seminar it was very informative and also thanks to the gentleman that let me follow them over the bar top men. Excellent!  My son nabbed his first marlin yesterday. How was the snapper fishing. A few mates of mine were out and it was tough going for them

Yeah I heard when your son hooked up, pretty cool.
Snapper fishing was great for us, caught a good feed and got a few gurnard too. Not sure what a bad day out there looks like but it was definitely better than east coast for us.

Wow, my mates went to 60 where they finally caught a handful of fish. Normally I'd expect them to get a binful
