Has anyone fished the Makarora lately, apparently it is quite heavily fished now.
I went up there once when I was younger, think I got a small salmon on my old spin rod.

I'll be heading up there this weekend, with fly and spin rod at the ready.
Any info would be great Smile

Fished it 10 or so days ago.
Had a chat to a station worker, he said the amount of anglers this season was considerably less than last due to the weather and such. However still very heavily fished.
I found it fantastic, lots of fish taken on Cicada and Stimulator patterns, 2 - 9 lb plus a few larger spotted, but these fish were very spooky and casts needed to be precise and dragless drifts a must.
The river has risen and dropped since then and I'd assume it is back in good fishing condition by now.
Heard good things about the fishing closer to the lake with your spinner, but would definately say use the fly further upstream toward the tree line. Cicadas were deafening up there!

Take plenty of sandfly repellent. Clouds of them last time I was there.
Spectacular spot - I like fishing from the outlet upstream through the braided runs rather than the gorge.

Unfortunately I came back empty handed... since I released this beauty Big%20smile

Very windy while I was up there and I'm not confident enough with my fly-rod yet to cast in the sort of gale. Got this on my spin rod near Makarora township.
No trouble with sand flies, though saw lots of repellent for sale.

Edit: can't seem to get image on to my post...

I weighed him at 8.5lbs, though what you don't see from the photo is how wide he is,
I thought I had hit a snag at first, took me 5 minutes to realise...Embarrassed

Ah yeah, just took a look at how thick that tail is, not surprised he weighed that much! Bit of an ugly brute...but the fish is quite good lookingTongue
