just a question, do we have to go down this road again, we got rid of the Phecda who has come back on here numerous times and continues to be booted.

personally it wears friggin thin guys, yip pot calling the kettle hear but hell I can see just how stupid I must look to others when i do the same.

yes tuna stocks are very low they are still about but dam hard to find with sparodic catches here and there, I wish there were more but there are'nt the reasons well do we need to run down a flogged horse and accuse the commercial boys, we know they are the problem and money talks, but lets look at what we as recreational fishoes did about it, I can say hand on heart I did nothing not a bloody thing.

Hey Mozz got any pics of the tuna you have caught over the ways.

Live baits, small skipbaits and straight running trolled lures like rapala's sprokets, krakatoa's moldcrafts etc did the damage for us, we never managed one on a angle faced lure though.

spreader bars also worked well when you had big schools up moving fast and feeding.

thats a a 200

thats impressive wow.

nice pics yes it would be nice to land anything that sort of size, we had a massive school of Y/T off the garden a couple of weeks back could not catch it so missed out on the frenzy, dropped a few baits for the night drift in the hope of nailing one but nothing other than a shark attack. will always run the little lure out the back in the hope it happens.

The sustainability of the yellowfin stocks within the New Zealand EEZ is a pretty hard question to answer if you ask me, as these Tuna are highly migratory which travel within other countries EEZ (Exclusive economic zones) before they reach the NZ fishery. What I mean by this is that they are being targeted by every single fishing method( purse seign, surface long line, trolling ect) within these countries, so if we are fortunate enough we may get the leftovers which manage to struggle through.

The yellowfin fishery is an interesting one for many reasons. They are highly sought after by the purse seign vessels up in the pacific where 3-5 kilogram juvinile fish are the norm. I am quite concerned about this fishery as yellowfin are highly migratory which leeds to overfishing from many countries that they pass through. In saying that though, a kiwi tuna fisherman from Nelson who goes up to Samoa every season after the Albacore run, manages to get great catches of big yellowfin to 100 kilo on a regular basis. He has got a good catch history also, however it must have been a couple of seasons ago he dipped out, but he put it down to the surface temperature being to warm and the fish sticking right down deep on the thermocline. He can identify them on his sonar and sounder readings.

Big eye Tuna- I have no problems with this fishery as they are always out there, especially in Bay Of Plenty waters where they show up in droves from about September. We have got a quite good fishery which recreational fishers should and will  develop in time i guess as they turn up well before the yellowfin do. As always currents dictate where you will find them however most years you'd be looking at 60 to 80 mile out, especially early spring.
I wouldn't be surprised if they remained in the New zealand waters year round. The foreign vessels outside 200 mile catch them year round, as well as the huge Albacore, one of which weighed in at 52 kilos caught from a tauranga based vessel a few years back.
Bluefin tuna is still pretty much a good fishery here in Nz. Also can be caught here year round in certain locations ( Quota gets caught thick and fast) however worldwide it is generally accepted as on the decline.

I asked Peter Pakula what he would recommend here to TARGET Yellow Fin and I was sure he was going to suggest Dojos but this is his suggestion. BTW We only troll off the rod holders so 3 rods max.

All hotheads.

cheers for all your advice.I'll get a couple of smaller lures and have a go. Just want to keep options open when fishing. would love to catch a YFT or any other tuna also would be completely stoked to be hooked up to anything.
Didn't mean to start an argument haha. Obald's comment was just abit of humour. And maybe not far from truth if it carries on the way it is going. I wonder how long it will take before the commercial fishery is not cost effective. might not be far away. Us humans never seem to learn from past mistakes. greed and money and all that. we just take what we can get as fast as we can get and who gives a f%$k about the future. I saw the movie 'Avatar' in imax 3d the other day, was pretty impressive. Although in parts it was a little cheesy it was right on about the **** that goes on to make a bit of money.
anyway better go try catch a fish. the upcoming weather is looking primo into next week.
cheers

If you're going to run a smaller skirted lure in the hope of bagging a tuna and/or a marlin, why not rig it up as a small daisy chain. The daisy chains I thinkincrease the attraction for tunas, although to be honest I have not hunted tuna for the last 3 years here in NZ apart from skippies for bait a coupla times.
If I were to have just one choice fora tuna lure, I'd go for a 4-lure daisy chain, made of 3 smaller hex-heads, and one larger hex head tail lure in a different colour....like 3 blue/whites and a pur/blk chaser, or something similar. This lure sits just subsurface, and seems to get a lot more hits than a solitary lure.

...not the best pic I guess, seeing as it is only a baby albert, and the chain is made of B2 squids, but you gets the idea.
Anyhow, just my thoughts.... oh, and I agree with Obald....there really are only 11 fish sent here this year.

We had a bloody massive meatball 6 years ago huddled in between our tinny and another for 5 minutes with yellowfin smashing through and making a hell of a thud on the hulls haha LOL. Was bloody awesome. Were only catching the XXL skippies as we were only chucking 1 anchovie at a time. First time we threaded 3 on a bloody marlin ate it Cry Had it on for an hour and a half which was amazing considering it was on a little 5/0 tuna circle tied straight onto 24kg mainline lol. Was biggest chance i had at catching a YFT. Hope to get another chance oneday.

Ended up getting 15kg of anchovies for the bait freezer though which was mint.

Captain Aparagus. You are jonnie on the spot mate. Tuna, especially Yellowfin and Bigeye tend to take lures which are straight running and do not breath air and duck and dive like your usual marlin lures do. While trolling we use straight running lures which run just under the surface. If you manage to get to Tauranga there's a guy called Bill MacBryne who should put you in the right direction. He is the creator of a lure called the Mac skippy. Alot of the tuna boats use this fella's lures and if you run it as a daisy chain is very effective. We have managed to hook huge albacore and Bigeye tuna on them, especially at dusk where you cannot visually see the lures yourself.

The three best lures for tuna trolling are as follows.
Mac skippy( daisy chain) for bigeye.
Zest lure's. Albacore.
Seaferrets(if you can get them somewhere) Yellowfin and Albacore.

We have tryed something called the Zucker lure which is ok but the above is the top three.
