I just picked up a shimano backbone elite, 7'7", 15-24kg for $99 from marine deals. Looks like the have sold out now but pretty good rod for the cash. I will be using it for heavy straylining in winter, throwing skipbaits and lures in summer. Just need to save for a reel now.

I bought one (ilusionPSS24-37) at the bigining of summer to take to Tonga came back mostly untried. Have had a few kings on it to around 20kg. It has handled the fights awsomly in mostly very shallow water but I have to admit all kingy hookups have been on livies. Am still working out the popper/stickbait thing but I know when I hook up the rod will do the buisness.

what spinning reel puts out 30kg of drag? Stellas certainly don't. You can't even get that from a 80w without moding it.

photo of said fish and fisho,  photo does not do this fish justice, caught on a offshore illusion 7'6 most hurt i have EVER seen put on a rod, very hard to beat for the money i think, the cast weight is abit up the sh#t tho, max 140grm id say, but work dwn to a 60grm nice too prity soft in the tip

+ 1 for the lighter Offshore Illusion. You can get Leon to build you one in 8' also. Phenomenal rod fullstop, and for the money you can't go wrong.

The Fin Nor Offshore are rated at 27.2kg, but I think I'd want ot be tied onto the boat before using that kind of drag.

Is that useable drag? I think not, it probably peaks at 27.2 for a split second then drops of ridiculously and becomes jerky... My experience using a fin or any how
