Okay, Want a cheap topwater setup to compliment my jigging setup.
Will be attaching it to a spare Finnor Offshore 7500 (at least for now)so  just looking for advice on rods.
Was hoping on something under $400 but could maybe stretch a little on that if convinced. Wink
Will be primarily stickbait (possibly small poppers but that's not important).

So some contenders that look okay: (from cheapest as far as I can work out)
Daiwa Monster Mesh Max 832
Daiwa Demon Blood 762XH
Offshore Illusion 150-200 7'6" (or 8'6")
Shimano caranx (Long cast or Pencil instrument?)

I will await the stream of expert advice...Smile

I'm by no means an expert but I'm using an 8' Okuma Andros stickbait rod which goes well. Cost about $300.

Old thread on rods :

I would like to see the beast who can run 30kg of drag with thumb pressure comfortably while the fish goes at 40k which further increases drag pressure due to friction heat, etc.

Shimano terez do a popper/stickbait rod in their range.  Spied one yesterday at Fishcity.  Nice looking rod and reasonable money.  I fish with an Okuma Andros -3 piece 7 foot 3 inch and I also have Diawa Monster Mesh the older grey model about 7 foot 9 inch. Both are nice rods -the diawa casts popper and stickbaits a good distance and works a stickbait better.  But I use the Andros more because of it's slightly shorter length.  Reason the Terez attracted my attention was it looked even shorter - maybe only 7 foot and slightly ligher weihgt -suited to PE 4-5.  Alot of my fishing in gulf is softbaiting with a stickbait rod handy for when kings show -a shorter rod is often easier to quickly fire out.  And a lot of the time PE4-5 is going to be ample for the fish we are catching and nicer to fish with -allows use of smaller baits.

Hi
I have two Shimano Raiders 7 foot that I got from hunting and fishing botany a bit back for 99 $ each,,They are all I use and rated at 10 -15kg of memory..one stopped a sting ray at 1.5 m using an old pen jug master with steel spool..Its over 35 years old and was used at mouth of manukau into the main channel for most of the time now just on my 16 foot boat..

I have an optus rig but not had a work out yet but seams ok...I don't buy expensive as have to many old rigs and they just keep on going...Cheers Phill

I just picked up a shimano backbone elite, 7'7", 15-24kg for $99 from marine deals. Looks like the have sold out now but pretty good rod for the cash. I will be using it for heavy straylining in winter, throwing skipbaits and lures in summer. Just need to save for a reel now.

I bought one (ilusionPSS24-37) at the bigining of summer to take to Tonga came back mostly untried. Have had a few kings on it to around 20kg. It has handled the fights awsomly in mostly very shallow water but I have to admit all kingy hookups have been on livies. Am still working out the popper/stickbait thing but I know when I hook up the rod will do the buisness.

what spinning reel puts out 30kg of drag? Stellas certainly don't. You can't even get that from a 80w without moding it.

+ 1 for the lighter Offshore Illusion. You can get Leon to build you one in 8' also. Phenomenal rod fullstop, and for the money you can't go wrong.
P.S. nice friggen fish

The Fin Nor Offshore are rated at 27.2kg, but I think I'd want ot be tied onto the boat before using that kind of drag.

Is that useable drag? I think not, it probably peaks at 27.2 for a split second then drops of ridiculously and becomes jerky... My experience using a fin or any how
