HELP PLEASE!

Im having issues with my leader connection have had 3 line breaks in the last 3 outings while casting.

Have retrieved all the poppers with mono leader still attached so breaking at the braid side of Knot

Always seems to be ok first 3 or so casts then you hear that catching sound and pingConfused
Im not even trying to cast to the horizon because im aware of the issue so casts are smooth i think.

Using 50lb suffix braid/80lb supple trace and albright knot.

The knots always really tidy and trimmed close have tried varying amounts of wraps of the braid & i dont see how another knot will be any smoother even tried some silicone over the knot and it only lasted 3 casts.

Any ideas because i dont!

Used both a Rocky II and a GT popper rod the reel is an Okuma VS80a.

I have done some shock testing with braids up to 50 lb with my bare hands..the results are suprising...that catching sound will be the culprit...wouldnt take much to snap using a rod underload.

Try a Page Ranking knot or even better an FG,I use FG and have found it easy to tie and cast - no breakages.

Adrian, what braid you using?

The only reason I ask is that I have been using Rovex braid to surfcast in the muddy with and have the same thing happen to be before and its not the knot that failed, rather further back.  Have found that if I put too much power into the cast I get little loops in the braid that knot up in the cast that catch on the guides as it goes through and then bang, there goes everything.

Have had it happen on ack to back uni's, FG and now the P R knot.

Al bright knot is a little on the bulky side and will be the cause of your problem, It's is designed as a light line weight knot so ideal for SB etc but not good for larger gear especially if your casting. PR knot or bimini wind-on will resolve allot of the issue. thinner lower profile knots which are longer and smother stop the line whipping back around the guides causing the bust off.

Keep in mind Seth that depth-finder is a softer braid that is not really designed for casting. you need to look at a stiffer braid if your wanting cast-ability, a soft line "flaps" as the knot goes through the guides causing tangles around the guides. it can also be caused by a spool that is to full and bad timing on a cast.

Hmmm sounds a bit strange, maybe the albright isnt too smooth going thru the guides?

Cant say I have ever had that happen. Cant remember the name of the knot I'm using but have put links to youtube of it on here before. Tony Pena knot or his variation of something anyway. Works really well for me when poppering.

got a sneaking suspicion that the Viros and depthfinder are both Very similar braids , well they are on paper anyway. and weight for weight feel very similar, the Viros is supposed to be slightly stiffer though more designed for casting. Surprisingly the suffix performance I have been using a little bit and found that not bad at all.... suits my style at least

Mini me is doing well mate (thanks for asking) now to get him strong enough to go fishing with me :D

Good to hear hookerpuka.  My boy is 18 months old and is really interested in fish.  Brought a little bait catcher so going to take him down to the wharf soon to see what he thinks.

Suffix aye, will have a feel and see what I think.

i agree with this, i had the same thing happen to me a while back from the braid often tangling in the guides with my softbait set and small poppers. was real frustrating. i changed the braid, problem fixed.

Dont worry it happens with with $200 spools if you get it wrong also...tie your leader to somthing solid ie Car towbar and take a few wraps arpound a gloved hand, give it a quick jerk and see where it is breaking,Im not suprised if it is you braid not your knot.

A mate and I sat in a tackle shop with scales and many different braids, none of them like shock (no stretch) but some were shocking - we had your braid (type) break around 7kg when jerked!

While this may not be scientific and absolute it does show what a mono shock leader can do to save/reduce terminal tackle loss when things go pear shaped or that biieeeg fish hits your bait..

Braid seems to often break at a much lower breaking strain when it has been knotted, as opposed to unknotted.
Hollow core JB might be the answer? It breaks well above the stated strength, and can utilise a wind on sleeved leader, doing away with knots. The JB 60 I purchased is the same diameter as a few 80lb Braids I have purchased in the past, but has a higher breaking strength.
Not cheap, but when you loose some lineyou can splice in a replacement length.

Sufix and Rovex are the same braid, just a revamp and name change from Sufix.

The better Braids are soft and limp like Virivas and YGK, the next best (my personal casting favorite] are Tufline XP and Gerry Brown.
I agree with Falco on the shock breaking of the mentioned line, my tests on Blue and Multicolour had 50lb breaking at 17lb jerked with a spring scale.

I use depthfinder and various not probs at all for casting, havnt tryed suffix though, personal dont think i like the stiffer braids. My couple of suggestions would be;
check your guides for chips or cracks
change your leader length, If your not already, shorten leader so no wraps on the reel and leader stops just above your casting finger.
The reel may be the prob, I have not used this reel but if not braid friendly ive seen reels have all sorts of probems tangles etc.
Yip and change to a twisted leader with bimini.
good luck

Ok haven't changed Braid yet but shortened up leader as above and also had a friend help me with a PR knot.

Threw a fair few casts today and no problems even when i had a wrap around the spool so looks like things are improvingThumbs Up

Thanks for the tips and suggestions i will change braid after i have given this a good hammering.
