Reply from John Elliot at Daiwa NZ

Hi Graeme,

Thanks for your e-mail regarding Daiwa Saltiga Reels.
Recently Daiwa Japan has announced a recall on Daiwa Saltiga reels that
have exhibited a stiffer than normal rotation.
The recall only affects certain reels from a recent manufacturing batch
that was not exported to New Zealand. This issue does not affect any
reels purchased in New Zealand from authorized Daiwa retailers.
For Saltiga reels purchased outside of New Zealand consumers need to
contact their point of purchase.

Regards

John

Seems like the Saltiga owners who purchased here in NZ can rest easy
I'm trying to find out for the guys here in NZ that have imported a Daiwa Salty or Catalina in recent months from overseas what the Serial number range of these effected reels are.. If you have just ordered one in the past two weeks it won't be from the effected batches of reels...

Good to know that the issue is not widespread. Good that daiwa is on top of the situation

Serial number Antz.... Should have one on the box if you still have it... all you need to do is find out if that number is registered with Daiwa NZ... they will have records...

My new Catalina was imported just before Xmas and is a prime candidate for being in the problem batch. No issue yet with the handle winding, but will be keeping an eye on it. Very happy with the price and service I got from www.jpangler.com.

On a slightly separate topic, does anyone know why Daiwa NZ (Brittain Wynyard) seem so disinterested in promoting the Daiwa fishing tackle? Daiwa Australia was all over this recall putting their local customers at ease days after it came out. Well over a week later and B.W. still "doesn't know anything about it". Coupled with the fact that B.W. only bother to bring in a fraction of the Daiwa range, leaves me constantly shopping overseas when I'd prefer to be buying and supporting local Kiwis. Dunno, just seems like they're squandering a top brand with lackluster effort IMO.

Daiwa could be the no 1 competition to shimano, its a great product, but as you say, very little promotion, poor pricing, small range, and pretty poor backup. Shame really

I agree. I find myself buying things i need overseas. Eg.. the new catalina which in my opinion very close to saltiga in performance at a very reasonable price. A prime candidate for kiwi anglers. As the saltist range has been for years. I see so many dollars being spent offshore because of price and range issues from daiwa. What can you do?? Daiwa australia does a far better job and hats off to them. Obviously better people managing it..

I'm not sure as to why Daiwa NZ didn't continue with the Catalina series... I can understand why they have limited their range to mostly lower to mid cost reels as this makes up bulk of kiwi anglers price budget....plus the cost of carrying spares across a large range of reel types can be expensive to stock...
As previously mentioned it opens the door to private importing from overseas on reel series that can't be obtained here.... As for the way Daiwa products are priced in NZ a lot would come down to expected margins on each range both wholesale and retail... Must understand that NZ makes up less than 1% of global tackle sales and buying from a "E" sales outlet from overseas that has low overheads and high turnover and don't have to worry about warranty etc will always screw our local prices...
Online sales will eventually see the end to the small tackle shops here... Its happening already with the likes of Marine Deals and Torpedo 7 ...add in low cost topend reels with no shipping fees from overseas and it speeds up the process of these local shops going out of business..
There will always be those that want to see first hand what they are buying but with the number of online tackle reviews, forums like this, anglers soon get a good picture of what's a good product and what's not...it's then a simple matter on getting online with your credit card...
At least guys like Greg at Go Fish have made a great effort at giving the best price and best advice...both online and in person...
